STEEL BUILDING INSULATION: GREAT SAVINGS IN THE LONG RUN

Whatever the purpose of your steel building, it is going to require costs to ensure temperature control. If it is a home, then you will need heating during the winter and cooling during the summer so that the people inside can feel comfortable. If it is a storage unit, you will need some temperature control system so that the goods inside remain at an optimum temperature, especially the perishables. The heating and cooling costs can be a significant addition to any building cost. This is not very apparent in the beginning because most of these costs occur during operation on the long run. With some advance planning and including steel building insulation, you can now greatly save on your heating and cooling bills.

Insulation helps in the overall reduction of heat loss from the building. At the same time, when the outside temperatures are high, the same insulation doesn't allow it to enter the building. Most metal buildinginsulations available today prevent all three forms of heat loss – conduction, convection and radiation. Apart from heat insulation, these provided an additional benefit in the form of noise reduction. Steel building insulation is able to absorb noise and make the building sound proof so that you can enjoy a good and pleasant interior.

Fiberglass is the most commonly used steel building insulation today and is a very good choice especially for homeowners who want to opt in for steel houses. Fiberglass is used along with another facing material and covers the entire structure. Therefore it acts like a uniform blanket around the steel building and therefore can be quite an effective heat insulator. The thickness is the determining factor for the efficiency of this heat insulation. An experienced steel building manufacturer will know exactly the climatic conditions at your place and will be able to suggest the right insulation thickness for your building.

Reflective insulation is another type of insulation that is particularly useful in places where the temperature soars during summer months. As the name suggests, reflective insulation mainly reduces heat loss or gain through radiation. Therefore when the sun is shining brightly over your steel building, reflective insulation will keep your home from heating up. However, reflective insulation also contains an inner passive layer usually made up of plastic or polyethylene that reduces heat flow through conduction and convection as well. Therefore you get a complete insulation package. The outer reflective surface is usually made of aluminum. During winters, the passive inner layer prevents heat loss from the steel building while during the summer the reflective outer layer keeps the sun away from the building.

Spray insulation is another type of steel building insulation that is being used for small aesthetic buildings as it hardly modifies the looks of the building. The building is sprayed with a special insulating spray. This spray can have a number of components but primarily contains polyvinyl alcohol or polyurethane. Additional qualities of this spray include fire proofing properties that further help prevent any fire disasters with your building. Some components also contain moisture prevention properties that improve the life of your steel building construction.

Buildings of Pittsburgh

Buildings of Pittsburgh

$22.37

At the forefront of national and international change, Pittsburgh has long been portrayed as a place for innovative architecture. From its origins as a fort built in 1753 at the urging of a twenty-one-year-old George Washington, through its industrial boom, and into contemporary times, when it has become a pioneer for the ideals and philosophy of environmentally friendly architecture, the city has a history of development that exemplifies the transformative nature of America's built environment. With "The Buildings of Pittsburgh, " we now have a substantive reference book (organized by area, with subsets of geographical entries) that relates the architectural history of this ever-changing city up to the present day. Franklin Toker examines Pittsburgh's architectural transformations from its early architecture following the Federal and Gothic Revival styles, to the city's importation in the mid-nineteenth century of new styles in the Romantic tradition, to industrial Pittsburgh with all its factories and huge institutional buildings, and finally to the city's environmentally conscious renaissance that began in the mid-twentieth century. In doing so, he shows why Pittsburgh has consistently been rated among the top three American cities for buildings by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and how the city once famous for embracing industry and pollution is now preaching the gospel of clean air and "green" architecture.

This first book of poems by hart Crane, one of his three major collections, was originally published in 1926. The themes in White Buildings are abstract and metaphysical, but Crane's associations and images spring from the American scene. Eugene O'Neill wrote: "Hart Crane's poems are profound and deep-seeking. In them he reveals, with a new insight and unique power, the mystic undertones of beauty which move words to express vision." "Genius is a mystery resistant to reductive analysis, whether sociobiological, psychological, or historical. Like Milton, Pope, and Tennyson, the youthful Crane was a consecrated poet before he was an adolescent."-Harold Bloom "Crane's poems are as distinct from those of other contemporary American poets as one metal from another. This man is a mystical maker: he belongs to a group of poets who create their world, rather than arrange it, and who employ the idiom of their fellows with divine arbitrariness to model the vision of themselves."-The New Republic "In single lines of arresting and luminous quality and in whole poems Mr. Crane reveals that his originality is profound."-Times Literary Supplement "The line structure is so beautiful in itself, the images so vividly conceived, and the general aura of poetry so indelibly felt that the intelligent reader will move pleasurably among the impenetrable nuances."-New York Times

The Spaces Between Buildings

The Spaces Between Buildings

$36.98

Gates and fences, sidewalks and driveways, alleys and parking lots -- these ordinary features have an important architectural impact, influencing how a building relates to the spaces around it. As geographer Larry R. Ford argues, architectural histories and guidebooks tell us surprisingly little about the character of American cities because they concentrate on buildings taken out of context, buildings divorced from space. In The Spaces between Buildings, Ford focuses on the neglected "nooks and crannies" between structures, supplementing his analysis with three photographic essays. Long before Ford knew anything about geography or architecture, he was a connoisseur of front porches, alleys, and loading docks. As a kid in Columbus, Ohio, he knew where to find coal chutes to play in, which rooftops and fire escapes were ideally suited for watching parades, and which stoops were perfect for waiting for a bus. To him the spaces between buildings seemed wonderfully integrated and connected. The Spaces between Buildings is the result of Ford's preoccupation with the relationship of buildings to one another and how their means of access and boundaries organize the areas around us. As Ford observes, a city with friendly, permeable facades and a great variety of street-level doors is more conducive to civic life than a city characterized by fortresslike structures with blank walls and invisible doors. Life on the street is defined and guided by the nature of the surrounding buildings. Similarly, a residential neighborhood with front porches, small lawns or gardens, and houses with lots of windows and architectural details presents a more walkable and gregarious setting than a neighborhood where public space is surrounded by walls, three-car garage doors, blank facades, and concrete driveways. Ford begins by looking at the growth of four urban places, each representing a historical era as much as a geographic location: the Islamic medina; the city shaped by the Spanish renaissance; the nineteenth-century North American city; and the twentieth-century American city. His first essay also discusses the evolution of the free-standing structure as a basic urban building type and the problems encountered in beautifying the often work-a-day back and side yards that have helped to create the image of the untidy American city. The second essay examines the urban trend toward viewing lawns, gardens, hedges, and trees as an essential adjunct to architecture. The final essay focuses on pedestrian and vehicular spaces. Here the author includes the landscape of the garage, sidewalks, streets, and alleys. In its exploration of how spaces become places, The Spaces between Buildings invites readers to see anew the spaces they encounter every day and often take for granted.

Buildings, Clothing, and Art

Buildings, Clothing, and Art

$35

Indian people settled in climates that ranged from the Arctic, where temperatures sometimes drop lower than 50 degrees below zero, to the Amazon Basin, where the weather is hot and rainy. American Indians adapted to these challenges by inventing houses and clothing that were uniquely suited to the climates where they lived, and they developed art that reflected these surroundings. Buildings, Clothing, and Art covers the many contributions that American Indians have made in these areas. It describes how the Inuit built igloos, the American Indians in the Northwest built plank homes, the American Indians in the Northeast built wigwams, the Iroquois and the Huron in the Northeast built longhouses, the Plains Indians built tipis, and more.

A History of American Architecture: Buildings in Their Cultural and Technological Context

A History of American Architecture: Buildings in Their Cultural and Technological Context

$38.99

Why did the Victorians drape their buildings in elaborately ornate decoration? Why was the Arts and Crafts movement so popular with the American middle class at the end of the 19th century? Why did Modernism replace traditional architectural styles after World War II? Mark Gelernter provides fresh answers to questions like these, convincingly showing how buildings express powerful cultural forces. Embodying deeply felt attitudes about fundamental issues, buildings express our relationship with nature, our social relations with others, the importance of the individual, the value of science and technology, and our political role in the world. He explains how designers sometimes expressed these ideas with available building technologies, while at other times they invented new technologies in order to realize new ideas. Each of the ten chronological chapters, accompanied by almost 300 photographs, drawings, and maps, begins with a broad survey of the dominant cultural forces and technologies, and then discusses how designers of the day responded with particular architectural forms.

Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings and Their Makers

Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings and Their Makers

$7.34

Carter Wiseman presents an original, readable, and literate overview of the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have defined American architecture over the past hundred years. In a survey that is "as good . . . as anyone is likely to write . . . accurate in its facts, wise and fair in its judgments"(New York Times), he focuses to a large extent on architecture's makers--the commanding figures who by force of personality and sheer artistic ability indelibly influenced its progress: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, Frank Gehry. The triumph of modernism; the growth of architectural preservation; the eclipse of the practical arts by money, theory, and abstraction; and the uncertain future of architecture in a country that celebrates both individualism and community are just some of the issues addressed in this highly praised work.
