Architectural Language
In any given discipline, language forms the key ingredient for any meaningful growth and development. Likewise this concept applies also to architecture. And it's on that note, we establish that diverse communities do use the phrase-architecture description language, and the major communities include the software engineering, and the other is the enterprise modeling and modeling community. Basically, the software engineering community adopts an Architecture Description Language (ADL), a computer language to define and describe system architectures. More so, the software engineering community has developed numeral ADLs such as AADL, Wright and Acme among others. On the other hand, the enterprise modeling and engineering community have equally developed ADLs designed for diverse enterprises stages. All in all, these typically refer to the relevance architecture as the architecture that is transferred to the software engineers.
Therefore as the ADLs gained momentum so do the designers and architectures who through passion attempted to incorporate art, craft, technology and history to tell their story in a myriad of architectural marvels? For instance, think of Mount Angel Bendictine Monastery, Whose architecture was Alvar Aalto, the construction system of this building consists brick exterior merged with steel frames to give a solid and firm structure. The exterior entry overview of this building, which is elaborately landscaped captures ones imagination through the environmental message communicated through the lawns, depicting a series of continuous signs which are, principally linear.
According to Derrida:"…whether we are concerned with verbal or the written signal, with the monetary signal, or with the electoral delegation and political representation, the circulation of signs defers the moment in which we can encounter the thing itself…" Thus, the concepts we have are represented in the manner that the building is designed; hence the plain single story inner facade in pale brick modestly continues the courtyard edge, blending with the customary buildings on either side, goes far beyond political imagination by presenting an actual thing that is tangible and wit a definite sign of reality. A signified that is only laudable after entering this fascia and going through the circulation center is the guest struck with the supremacy and spirit of the plummeting, elevating arc of the central space, calmly conspicuous with light from above. Giving it both linguistic and architectural values and social significance, hence De Saussure observed, "Value is doubtless one element in signification` ,and principally, it is embedded in the significance of this building, more so, the unity of the whole architectural plan relies on the signification and the values of the initial setting which is entirely distinct.
Thus, the signifier is well articulated by what we have in the building, the fan shaped plan which is complimented by a well balanced hue, hence giving the message as imbued in fan shaped corn that it is environmental friendly, more its setting is on a hilly ground. Thus, the first sign which is introduced in this architectural setting is depicted by the way the whole building is interweaved with the environment and more so the green foliage surrounding it. Another sign, that is apparent is depiction of the serene ambience which is a prelude to heavenly ambience, it is on that knowledge, that brings the concept of art, religion and technology together in order to create such a piece of work. The structural expression combined with the interior decorations, lighting and the eventual ventilation, all create a message of unharmonized environment as Barthes noted,"…it can thus be seen that in the total system of the image the structural functions are polarized."
