Blade Masonry

The saber saw, which is also known as a powered jig saw, is the hand held power tool used to make curved cuts in wood and other materials. I've found it can be invaluable in home improvement projects, but you need to know how to use one properly.

Of course, a saber saw is no substitute for the power and precision of a table saw or compound mitre saw for use on large work pieces, but it's portability and versatility give it advantages in many jobs. The key is choosing the right blade. This isn't a "one size fits all" kind of deal.

Standard sabre saw blades are removable and replaceable. You have the choice of special blades for cutting plasterboard, masonry, leather, rubber, plastics or cardboard. Carbide chip and tungsten blades are good for cutting extra hard materials, like ceramics, and last much longer than standard blades. Various tooth configurations are also available for making finer cuts in hardwoods and laminates. Softwood blades can also be bought.

Starting a Cut

Hold your workpiece securely on a surface that will allow enough clearance on the underside for the blade to operate without hitting any obstructions. I like to use a couple of sawhorses, but laying the piece between two chairs will also do in a pinch. Since the saber saw blade cuts on the upstroke tend to splinter the surface facing you, you want to lay the finished surface of the material facing down.

Rest the front of the saw's shoe on the material- the blade should be just clear of the edge- and line it up with your marked line. Switch on the saw's power and move forward with just enough pressure to easily cut, keeping the sole on the work. When the cut is finished, switch the power off and make sure to hold the saw until the blade stops running.

Cutting Curves

The blade on a saber saw is thin enough so that you are able to make curves with tight radii. Curves of wither concave or convex profiles can be made. It is best to mark out the profile of the curve you need to cut on the work material beforehand. Following the marked line by eye, cut on the waste material side. If the blade seems to be straining or twisting, don't force it. Instead, either change the blade to a thinner one, or cut out areas of the waste side with straight cuts in order to give the blade more clearance room.

Safety

Sabre saws are designed with safety in mind, but appropriate caution should always be used, as with any power tool. Make sure that the saw blade is securely locked in place after changing blades. Keep the power cord well clear from the blade when in use; this means watching out that the cord dos not pass under the work surface, but goes around it.

Lastly, before changing blades, always unplug the saw before changing blades. Your home workshop will no doubt benefit from the addition of a saber saw; just make sure you follow these tips.
