I ordered a glass block window at my local building supplies house. About one week ago. Note take with you a little index card with the rough opening dimensions. You measure this from block to block and from top to cement window sill. With the gentleman's help I ordered a glass block window without a vent. Our preference, you can order a vent if you like. You can also specify a dryer vent in on block. 22 1/2 by 36 1/2 So the window we ordered was 22x36. You will squeeze the grout in the 1/4 inch opening on either side. As it turned out I had just under 1/2 inch on each side. You want this do to the irregularities of the block. Now the grout can be grout traditional or synthetic caulk grout that goes on with a gun. I choose the traditional grout because I know how to work with it.
Saturday morning early took out the old metal casement window. This was easy I took out the window by tilting it until it came out completely. Using a Sawzall with a metal blade, I cut out the frame on the bottom and bent it up. This caused the two sides to collapse in. In just minutes I had the whole frame out. I spent just a few moments cleaning up the block and getting old caulk off the brick work. Then we ran a vacuum over the whole surface to clean it. This is where the grout will need to stick. Now the window comes with a fiber glass band around it. Please do not cut this band off. It holds the window together while you are moving it around. It does not rotten or get in the way so just let it sit there.
So with one other person outside I put the glass block assembly up on the window sill. We placed shims under it one from each side. Two on top of each other in a set. One on each side of the bottom. And one on each side of the top. Viewed from either side you see just 4 shims. I left the sides open. Into all these spaces you have to push the grout. I used two trowels one 4 inch blade and one that is one inch wide. Level the window and center it in the opening. I put a back up screw into the sill plate at the top just in case the shim came loose it would not topple into the cellar and break.
Mix the grout per the bags instructions mine had the polymer additive in dry form in the mix. Instructions were just add water. So I slowly added water until it was consistently wet but not runny. I left it alone for a few moments this is called (slack) it absorbs some of the water deep into the mix. So after a few moments it may appear to stiff. At this point only sprinkle a little water from your fingers will wet it. Not too much.
Adding the grout can be messy go ahead and get it all over the place but do push it into the gaps. I knew I had done a good job when I went outside and I could see the grout was 3/4 of the way to the outside. I added grout on the outside and smoothed the seams flat and cleaned my glass block with a good grouting sponge. This is important the sponge created the look so a good sponge has a huge impact on the final look.
At this point I cleaned up left all my tools dry and walked away for 2 hours. Both sides were sponge clean. It dries to a light film that is easily cleaned off with a dry rag.
When I returned it was set up. So I removed the shims leaving 4 holes to fill. Also the window I got has the grout set down ¼ inch so that you can add your grout on top incase you used a different color than what was ordered. I wanted this grout up at the top of the glass block. After I had all my holes full, I also filled the grout lines and smoothed them out with a dry wrung out sponge. I let all this set for a few moments I cleaned all the tools and got fresh water and went over every seam creating the finished look. Take your time and fuss over this part this is what you will see. Lastly I took an old tee-shirt and wiped the dry film off the window being very meticulous about all the details. Get to this while it is still a little wet so you can rub down a high spot. Now stand back and enjoy.
