An Introduction to the Ball Point Pen

A ball point pen, also known as a biro was first coined after its inventor Laszlo Biro. Ball point pens have internal chambers full of dense ink which is the relayed at the tip during use by the rolling action of a minute metal ball made of steel, brass, or tungsten carbide.

The production of cost-effective and dependable pens was the culmination of much experiment, contemporary chemistry and the meticulous abilities of 20th century expertise. The first ball point pen patent was confirmed on 30th October 1889 by leather tanner, John Loud. His version comprises a revolving minute steel sphere which was held in place by a socket.

A Hungarian newspaper editor, Laszlo Biro came up with the invention after many frustrating hours refilling fountain pens and staining his work; the pointed tip of the fountain pen also ruined his worksheets. It was then Biro observed that ink used in newspaper printing had a quicker drying time, and there were no apparent smudges. With his brother George who happened to be a chemist, they fitted the prototype with a small sphere that could be rotated freely in a hole. When the ball is moved, it picks up ink from the cartridge and clean traces permeate the paper. Laszlo subsequently filed a British patent on the 15th of June 1938.

There are two fundamental forms of pens; refillable and disposable. The refillable versions are usually made of metal and would cost more. The refill reinstates the whole ink reservoir instead of refilling it with actual ink. Disposable pens are of course, cheaper and mainly made of plastic. These pens cannot be re-used and discarded after the ink has run out.

The most common pens come with caps or covers to protect the tip when not in use, to prevent drying up. Some other types of pens have a device so the tip can be pulled in. This form of pen is controlled by a spring located inside the pen apparatus, but other implements are also used such as screws, slides, or buttons.

Ball point pens are omnipresent in contemporary times, although other types of pens are widely available; it is the ball point pen that can be found mostly in offices, schools, hospitals, and households. In fact, person may own more than one ball point pen. They are cheap, utilitarian, and easy to use. Once the ink dries, they are thrown away.

Pens are often used by businesses as a form of endorsements usually printed with the Company logo and contact information and disseminated for free.
