Build Concrete Brick Machine Pits

Brick machine pits are a wonderful addition to any patio or backyard. You can host large family or friends' cookouts or just enjoy a quiet homemade barbecue dinner by yourself. Making concrete barbecue pits are not difficult and can be done by any enthusiastic homeowner. Not only will this weekend project keep you busy, but you will also end up saving money otherwise given to hired help. Follow these steps to successfully build concrete barbecue pits for your backyard without using mortar.

Step 1: Seek Permission

Before you begin your building project, get the appropriate permission from your local building authority or fire department for any permits or building specifications that may be required because of the possible hazards involved with fires.

Step 2: Dig Trench and Make Pit Cover

Select an appropriate location in your backyard once you get the clearance needed and dig a trench that is at least 2 feet deep and 1 to 2 feet wide. Collect the soil in a wheelbarrow to dispose of later. This trench will be the outline of your barbecue pit.

Make a cover for your pit with scrap metal or wood, slightly bigger than the trench itself. It should cover the barbecue pit after you finish cooking to prevent falling leaves and other debris from getting inside. Make a small handle in the center with a piece of wood drilled into place.

Step 3: Place the First Row of Blocks

Place the first row of concrete blocks in the base of the trench. Make sure they are in level with the ground and do not wobble. If a block is lower than the surrounding blocks, lift it to add some sand beneath it, and if a block is higher than the rest dig out some dirt beneath it. Make the necessary adjustments until all the blocks are level and secure in the ground.

Step 4: Cover Foundation Area

Extend the first row of blocks all the way around the foundation, even the front, to enclose the entire area for burning. Make sure the blocks are secure and add sand or remove dirt to adjust them.

Step 5: Cover Pit Floor

Place fire bricks inside the first row of concrete blocks in the pit. Mix sand and water in a wheelbarrow to the consistency of ice cream and insert it between cracks in the bricks to make them secure.

Step 6: Make Pit Walls and Set Grates

Take each concrete block machine and stack it in the pit one by one. Since you are not using mortar, you need to place each brick carefully to make sure it fits in place perfectly. You want to create a smooth wall of concrete bricks. Stack the bricks until they are several inches from the top. Place the grates or wire grill over the top of the pit ensuring they are stable.Light a fire inside the pit with wood chips and cook a delicious meal.
