Experience Eco-Tourism

Costa Rica wrote the book on eco-tourism. Before it was trendy, Costa Rica understood that human beings and nature need to co-exist peacefully. It also understood the delicate balance between allowing tourists to get up close to their environment, without putting that environment at risk. It's understandable that Costa Rica was early to grasp the importance of eco-tourism. It is one of the most biologically diverse countries on the planet, and has a lot at stake. So, stay in an eco-lodge with a view of the Arenal volcano, and learn all about nature, without leaving a lasting footprint.

Walk in the clouds

Even the phrase "cloud forest" sounds magical. Formed by the topography of the earth and the nearness of the sea, a tropical cloud forest has a persistent cloud cover that lies gently over the forest canopy. Rich in mosses and vegetation, they are a wonder to experience and Costa Rica's cloud forests are among the world's most unique. The Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest is home to thousands of birds, ferns and orchids. With a number of canopy tours available, you can literally walk amongst the clouds.

Hit the Waves

Costa Rica's beaches are stunning, and they're home to some of the best surfing in the world. The water is warm, the waves are high, and whether you're just learning to hang ten or you're an expert surfer, Costa Rica is for you. The most popular place to surf is Tamarindo, on the Pacific coast. Crowds come for its variety of surfing experiences, from the beach to the famous Witches Rock. For great surfing with fewer people, try nearby Playa Grande.

Go Wild

Visit one of Costa Rica's National Parks to experience the sheer abundance of wildlife here. Manuel Antonio National Park offers guided tours where you're guaranteed to bump into monkeys, macaws and sloths. More than 100 species of mammals live in the park, as do more than 180 variety of birds. The brave at heart may want to go see the bats on a tour of the nearby Caves of Damas. Tortuguero is another national park, that's only accessible by boat or small plane. You can stay in a jungle lodge here, and tour the rainforest by boat, as your guide points our caimans, toucans, and more.

Go Sport Fishing

If you want to get out onto the ocean for your wildlife experience, why not charter a boat and go fishing? Costa Rica has some of the best sport fishing on both its coasts, with marlin and sailfish in the Pacific and tarpon and snook in the Caribbean. There are fishing excursions and charters available in just about every part of this country, giving you a real flavor of the local seas.

Zip It

Instead of just hiking on the jungle floor, or even walking high up in the forest canopy, why not go that one giant leap further and zip line through Costa Rica's famous landscape? All over Costa Rica, you'll find zip lines set up between the trees at various heights, offering you the unique opportunity of sailing high above the ground in a harness with one of the most spectacular views of the forest. You wear a climbing harness, clip yourself onto a cable, and go zipping from platform to platform. It's quite a thrill! The best zip line tours are in Monteverde, Arenal and Manuel Antonio.
