Mechanism. Regarded as the most complex part of an office chair, the mechanism is found under the seat. It connects the stem to the main unit. The mechanism usually comes with a metal box with levers and buttons. There are two types of mechanisms for office chairs: gas and manual. You can only get a replacement if the mechanism can be unbolted. In most cases, it is not so you would need to get rid of the chair altogether if the mechanism fails.
Cylinder or post. This is the long bar that supports the entire seat. For chairs with gas mechanism, the term gas cylinder is used. For manual operated chairs, the bar is called a post. Usually, the bar consists of two separate pieces connected together by screws. It is easy to get a replacement for this part.
Base. The base is the part that touches the floor surface and is responsible for weight distribution. Depending on the kind of chair, the base may have four to six arms, which are made of either metal of plastic. Tensions or screws are used to attach these parts so they can be replaced in case they get broken.
Casters. The wheels we often find on business chairs are called casters although they may not be present in all kinds of office chairs. They are attached to the arms of the base.
Cover or cushion. Available in different colors, these parts which can be purchased separately from chairs serve to provide comfort as well as aesthetics. They ease stress and tension on the back from long hours of sitting down. There are several manufacturers offer these products on different price ranges.
Other seating options for offices include leather, swivel, cushioned, reclining, and ergonomic chairs. Under these categories, you may find several manufacturers with their own lines of office chairs. Different kinds of chairs use different parts to make them function the way they are meant to be.
