Everyone wants to have a yard that contains something unique, something that your neighbors don't have. No one wants to have that "cookie-cutter" yard that looks just like the one next door. The problem is, when you go to the home improvement store to buy the resources for your landscape project, you are faced with the same alternatives that your neighbors were faced with when they bought the stuff for their landscape projects. It's no wonder that everyone's yard looks the same!
However, when you go shopping for those items that you need to make this landscaping project happen, remember that with a little extra work, you can make several things yourself that will make your yard distinctive. Items such as curbing, pavers, plinth blocks (decorative bases for posts), window sills and surrounds are just a sampling of precast concrete items that the average homeowner can make using the average set of homeowner tools and readily-available materials. The result will yield two benefits. The first will be having a hardscape consisting of unique materials, customs colors and a one-of-a-kind look that your neighbor can't duplicate. The second benefit will be the satisfaction of saying that you make these unique pieces yourself.
Once you have decided what your precast needs are, the next step is to determine which shape of precast pieces (straight pieces, curves, etc) and how many of each you will need to have to complete your project.
At this point it is time to build the boxes which will mold the concrete. These boxes are best constructed of ¾ inch melamine plywood because the melamine surface is smooth enough that minimal mold release is needed to prevent the concrete from sticking to the box. For most precast pieces, a length of three feet is the optimal compromise where the piece is light enough to remain workable and long enough to maintain esthetically pleasing.
Now that you have refined your needs, its time to start making precast pieces. Precast concrete consists of Portland cement, plaster sand, (sand that has no pebbles) water and color of some sort. There are a number of formulas and procedures for making precast concrete items that would take too long for me to address in this article, so I will continue with an article titled " Precast Concrete-Making Procedures."
David Jennings owns Specialty Stone, a California company that produces precast concrete for residential and commercial needs. His website is http://www.specialtystoneofca.com

Curbing It $9.99 Now in paperback from comedian and actor Jeff Garlin—who plays Larry David’s cheerful manager on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm —a year-long chronicle of his journey to reduce both his physical and carbon footprint in this laugh-out-loud self-experimental memoir. Jeff Garlin has dedicated the filming of an entire season of Curb Your Enthusiasm to completely making over his lifestyle in two major ways—by losing weight and going green. Larry David’s rooting for him. Jerry Seinfeld’s plotting against him. And his wife is just plain annoyed by everything. The hardest part of the endeavor is overcoming his food addiction—especially when craft service has a constant buffet of everything delicious you could imagine. In addition to cutting calories, Jeff accidentally falls into a love affair with pilates, sweats with Richard Simmons, and twice visits the Pritikin Longevity Center, which he says is “rehab for people who eat too much pizza.” As far as going green, Jeff has always been a big recycler, but he has a lot to learn. For example, actor Ed Begley Jr. is the guy to call if you want to reduce your environmental impact. Jeff does, and it changes everything. Hysterical, entertaining, and eye-opening, Curbing It is a comedic memoir that’s not to be missed. Previously published as My Footprint with bonus material added in this edition. |

Cement $81.25 n the most general sense of the word, a cement is a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together. The word cement traces to the Romans, who used the term opus caementicium to describe masonry which resembled concrete and was made from crushed rock with burnt lime as binder. The volcanic ash and pulverized brick additives which were added to the burnt lime to obtain a hydraulic binder were later referred to as cementum, cimentum, cment and cement. Cements used in construction are characterized as hydraulic or nonhydraulic. The most important use of cement is the production of mortar and concrete the bonding of natural or artificial aggregates to form a strong building material which is durable in the face of normal environmental effects. Concrete should not be confused with cement because the term cement refers only to the dry powder substance used to bind the aggregate materials of concrete. Upon the addition of water and/or additives the cement mixture is referred to as concrete, especially if aggregates have been added. The Role of Parliaments in Curbing Corruption $19.99 In most countries, parliament has the constitutional mandate to both oversee government and to hold government to account; often, audit institutions, ombuds and anti-corruption agencies report to parliament, as a means of ensuring both their independence from government and reinforcing parliament's position at the apex of accountability institutions. At the same time, parliaments can also play a key role in promoting accountability, through constituency outreach, public hearings, and parliamentary commissions. This title will be of interest to parliamentarians and parliamentary staff, development practitioners, students of development and those interested in curbing corruption and improving governance in developing and developed countries alike. |
