Make Your Own Coat Racks

The few materials you may need would be several pieces of wood, screws, sandpaper or sander, large size dowel and paint or stain. You may start off your do-it-yourself coat racks by deciding the style and also the rough size. If it is meant for kids' use then perhaps you would want a shorter rack. The example size will be a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 plank of woods with lengths about three or four feet. If you already have the pieces of wood with you, you may begin sanding the corners and all edges of a piece to be used as the center bar. Then cut a smaller piece of wood into half to be used as the base. Be sure that they are sufficiently large to support the coat rack. Then screw them onto another uncut piece of wood at 90-degree angle to form an "X" shape.

Next you can attach the centerpiece onto the base. This will form the basic structure of the standing type of racks. Then use the dowel or you may prefer the large C hooks and place them at any positions you like on the center pole. Attaching them onto the center post may require the hole-drilling process. Depending on your personal taste, you may wish to paint the materials before assembling them or some people will paint the coat rack after everything is assembled. After the paint dries, the rack is completed and can be used immediately.

The do-it-yourself coat racks are also available for the wall mounted type. It is much simpler to make. You can simply get a piece of flat wood at any desired thickness and length then sand the wood for smoother surfaces. You can design the wood up to your creativity; either plain, do some carvings, wood burning or bevel the wood edges. This is an advantage as people can make their very own unique rack. After completing the design part you can then drill the holes for hooks or pegs. Insert the hooks into the holes and for better attachment, place some glue onto it. Sand the edge and carry out some final cleaning then the rack should be done.
