Conditions of a rock slope exposed in a rock cutting which lead to failure

1. Mainly you will see the large and small cracks that have opened within the mass of rocks of the slope
2. Often boulders are falling
3. Can be seen the discontinuity of the bedding plane in addition to the cracks formed in the process of road cutting
4. Can be seen  intersection of two separate planes, for example, two joint sets or a bedding plane and a joint set
5. Can be seen unsafe dip angle and the direction of dip of the bedding planes or joint surfaces

 

Methods of stabilizing a heavily jointed rock slope

1.    Rock anchoring

In this method drill holes through unstable rock and into stable firm rock. Casing may be used in collapsing formations, then Inject grout from the bottom of the hole to flush contaminants from the bond zone, Insert steel bar (steel tendon) with a sheath that prevents bonding to unstable material, After the grout cures, install a bearing plate and locking nut, Pull the tendon to a prescribed post-tension load and lock in place to limit future movement

2.    Rock bolting

Rock bolting also a same kind of procedure which use long anchor bolt to It transfers load from the unstable exterior, to the confined (and much stronger) interior of the rock mass. Rock bolts are almost always installed in a pattern, the design of which depends on the rock quality designation

 

3.    Construction of retaining structures

Can be used a concrete or masonry wall align with the rock slope which leads to failure

4.    Meshing

In this case normally used cables or wire mesh with cross-ties, and cover the required area for stabilizing and using the steel nails meshed will be nailed to the rock slope

5.    Installation of slope drainage

Slope drainage should be maintain in a good way with installing a suitable drainage system in the slope if not water dripping through the rock layers will lead to educed the fiction between two layers and made unstable

 

6.    Cement grouting

Stabilizing a rock slope can be doing with cement grouting, in this case cement grout into the cracked places of the rock slope
