Between about 1978 and 1995, polybutylene pipes were installed in one out of every five homes built during those years. Most homes equipped with this inexpensive piping were located in the Southern and Western United States. While the material was low cost and cheap to install, it was considered durable and perhaps the next best thing to replace copper piping. However, polybutylene piping has not been used in a decade and a half because failure of the pipes led to lawsuits that were overwhelming in quantity. Unfortunately, nothing like a recall was performed, so many homes today still have polybutylene pipes in them. Here is what you should do if this is the case in your home.

The first step is to identify whether the piping in your home is polybutylene. A plumber or experienced home inspector are your best sources for this identification process. While simply looking at polybutylene pipes is not enough to detect deterioration, it can be enough to at least recognize the presence of the material in your piping.

Next, you must obviously take the steps to replace the pipes. This is the only way to eliminate the possibility of problems related to polybutylene piping. Fortunately for homeowners, this is a less expensive process than you might imagine. A re-piping specialist or licensed plumber can perform the procedure for you. Removing piping from a home involves cutting holes in the walls and floors. By hiring a professional, this can be done with minimal damage to walls and the structure of your home. The average house takes five days to re-pipe from start to finish. Upon return to your home, as long as you hired a reputable company do to the work, you will notice very minimal signs that work was ever done there. A one-story house averages around $3,000 to completely re-pipe.

Polybutylene pipes were installed in all areas of homes, from kitchen sinks to bathroom piping. The easiest place to have an inspector look is at the attachments under the sinks, the pipes leading to toilets, and near your hot water heater. Locations outside your home, including the main water shutoff valve or water meter, are other areas you can examine to determine the presence of polybutylene piping in your home. Never attempt to reliably identify it yourself, as PEX piping, which is much more durable than polybutylene, looks quite similar in color. A professional's opinion is your best bet.
