Some health problems - like an ingrown toenail - seem to defy a simple, non-drastic solution. That is probably why most people who end up with an ingrown toenail have some or all of the toenail removed surgically. However, "there is always a better way", is a reliable saying that I think is not wasted on the problem of an ingrown toenail.
The secret has to do with the cause and development of an ingrown toenail. The very root of an ingrown toenail depends on a local break at the edge of the nail. This is important because it means that the edge of the nail can now bite the nail bed, whereas before, the edge was flat and harmless. It's not important at the moment what caused the break in the integrity of the nail edge.
At the first cut of the nail into the nail bed, even a seemingly small one, a chain reaction is set off. The wound bleeds, cells break and release cell fluids. A pool of fluid forms in the ingrown toenail, with the nail stuck in the middle of it.
Think of what happens when you soak a little too long in the bath. The nail soaks in this pool of fluid, is weakened and eventually falls apart.
A fresh break in the nail spreads the damage over more of the edge of the nail. And that in turn multiplies the damage to the nail bed.
Imagine again if you taped a serrated knife to your skin and left it there all day.
That is why it is so important to try to prevent the nail from pressing into the nail bed. That is the logic behind surgery to remove all or part of a toenail. It's also the reason behind the simple measure of wedging something like a cotton pad between the nail and the nail bed.
Surgery is usually effective if the nail grows out perfectly or at least with a smooth and unbroken nail edge. Placing a cotton barrier can sometimes work.
But there is an another way that you have probably never heard about that accomplishes this as well or better than surgery - without the pain and resources. And uses the same idea as the cotton pad, but is far more effective.
