Primed surfaces will peel and crack far less than an unprimed surface. However, it can be a hassle to prime the entire house and find out later that it was not required. There are still a few exceptions where primer is not needed, so it pays to do some research ahead of time. Here are a few guidelines to consider as you decide before your next paint job.
All unfinished materials should be primed before you paint. This includes metal, wood, and drywall, among others. Inexperienced homeowners often forget about priming during their pre-remodeling prep work and find that their paint jobs do not last very long. Preparing the surface prior to painting reduces the peeling, cracking, and streaking problems that are common with do-it-yourself home improvements. This will also save you money on the paint itself by improving its ability to conceal blemishes and stains. This allows you to use less coats of paint to hide the unsightly marks. Tinted primer blends with the paint to enhance its color without adding an extra layer of thickness to the surface.
However, there are times when you do not need too. If you are painting a surface that has previously been painted, you can usually just clean the surface thoroughly. This only applies to paint that is in good condition. You may have to sand down any scratches or dings in the existing paint. If this is the case, be sure to prime the newly sanded areas so the new paint will adhere properly. It may also be a good idea if you are switching from one kind of paint to something different.
Priming may also be important when applying wallpaper, depending on the type of paint on the wall. Interior paint is usually latex and semigloss, which can be a very slick surface. This makes it difficult to get the wallpaper glue to adhere properly. Latex paint may also become soft and rubbery when it is exposed to wet glue. This causes the entire surface to squish and sag when the paper is hung on the wall. Preparing the surface ahead of time will give you a good solid surface to use as a base for the wallpaper paste.
You may also need to prime unpainted surfaces before hanging wallpaper. Most newer homes are made of drywall, not the more moisture-resistant plaster of the past. Using a layer of primer will protect the drywall from any seepage of moisture from the wallpaper glue. This prevents mold buildup and keeps moisture from breaking down and softening the drywall itself. Wallpaper will also adhere better than the softer and more malleable drywall plaster. Over time, paper can become heavy and will pull on the material of the wall, so you want to give it as sturdy a starting point as possible.

The Painter $7.28 The fashionables? They just want to know if a painting's hot. Whether it will gain. Queen Victoria said of Turner, 'He is quite mad.' A cockney who spoke his mind, he did not fit into the norm of the artist. Society saw him as a misfit, shocking, controversial. He was a visionary, the father of modern painting. The play examines his relationship to three women in his life. English painting is dead. It's dealers making fortunes out of sentimental dross. Cherubs. Dogs. The Painter by Rebecca Lenkiewicz premiered at the Arcola Theatre, London, in January 2011 in the production which marked the opening of its new premises on Ashwin Street. |

Nonsense on Stilts $18 Recent polls suggest that fewer than 40 percent of Americans believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution, despite it being one of science’s best-established findings. More and more parents are refusing to vaccinate their children for fear it causes autism, though this link can been consistently disproved. And about 40 percent of Americans believe that the threat of global warming is exaggerated, despite near consensus in the scientific community that manmade climate change is real. Why do people believe bunk? And what causes them to embrace such pseudoscientific beliefs and practices? Noted skeptic Massimo Pigliucci sets out to separate the fact from the fantasy in this entertaining exploration of the nature of science, the borderlands of fringe science, and—borrowing a famous phrase from philosopher Jeremy Bentham—the nonsense on stilts. Presenting case studies on a number of controversial topics, Pigliucci cuts through the ambiguity surrounding science to look more closely at how science is conducted, how it is disseminated, how it is interpreted, and what it means to our society. The result is in many ways a “taxonomy of bunk” that explores the intersection of science and culture at large. No one—not the public intellectuals in the culture wars between defenders and detractors of science nor the believers of pseudoscience themselves—is spared Pigliucci’s incisive analysis. In the end, Nonsense on Stilts is a timely reminder of the need to maintain a line between expertise and assumption. Broad in scope and implication, it is also ultimately a captivating guide for the intelligent citizen who wishes to make up her own mind while navigating the perilous debates that will affect the future of our planet. |
