Make a thin cross section of a gumamela leaf. Put it on a slide and examine it under the microscope. You could see the epidermis, the mesophyll or chlorenchyma tissue and the vascular tissue. The epidermis is a waterproof layer because of the cuticle present on the outer surfaces of the cells. In intervals are specialized kidney-shaped epidermal cells, the guard cells, between which are pores or openings called stomata. To control this, the opening and closing of the stomata are regulated by the guard cells. They are widened during the day and narrowed down or even closed at night.

On the other hand we will also discuss the leaf arrangement and phyllotaxy. The leaves on a stem are usually produced in a definite pattern. Phyllotaxy is the system of leaf arrangement. Depending upon the species of a plant, leaves may be arranged in opposite, alternate and whorled. In opposite, leaves are arranged in pairs on each node of a stem. In alternate, leaves are arranged around the stem, one on each node like that of a star apple. And last but not the least is whorled wherein several leaves are arranged at a node around the stem.
