Do hydrogen fuel cells work? Drivers around the world are excited at the prospect of using hydrogen as fuel for their vehicles, ever since Honda announced its plans to produce its hydrogen fuel cell car. This frenzy is far more fueled (pardon the pun) by the ever increasing cost of gasoline everywhere in the world.
The news seems too good to be true for some. I mean, do hydrogen fuel cells work? If they do, then it would be the greatest thing that has ever happened to us drivers since the handsfree kit!
The idea of using hydrogen fuel cells in itself is a beauty. The primary source of fuel that we are talking about here is just water. Yes, that very element that we use to put out fires. With this thought in mind, one would wonder how water can be used as a fuel source.
Think back to basic chemistry. Water is made up of oxygen and hydrogen. Yes, hydrogen is a combustible gas. It is very potent too - in fact, even more potent than your common gasoline. So what do you get from a hydrogen fuel cell? That's right, more power output from the engine with a lower cost fuel source.
The hydrogen does not totally substitute gasoline. The gas produced by the hydrogen fuel cell - a two-part hydrogen and one-part oxygen called Hydroxy - is fed into the engine's combustion chambers with the gasoline and air mixture, to enhance the burning process. This generates a far higher level of engine power at a reduced amount of gasoline burned. In most cases, gasoline consumption goes down at least 30% with the hydrogen fuel cell.
Even though we may have to wait a while before hydrogen fuel cell cars roll out of the production line, there are numerous guides available to help you make and install your own hydrogen fuel cells for your car. These guides don't usually cost much, and the materials to make them can easily be found in your hardware store. And if you're not technically handy, you can get a family member, friend, or your regular mechanic to put together the hydrogen fuel cell on your car.
