3 easy steps on how to lay wood flooring

Wood is the perfect flooring material – it provides superb insulation, creates natural warmth and looks beautiful. The main disadvantage most people find in wood flooring is that the material tends to absorb moisture and consequently rotten and become useless. This is definitely not going to happen as long as the wood boards are well finished. Laying wood flooring is not a particularly difficult task – you just need the traditional tools found in every home and some additional supplies in order to achieve the desired results. It is important that the wood boards you are going to use are prefinished. Here are the 3 easy steps on how to lay wood flooring.

Firstly, the subfloor should be covered with a type of insulation material. Experts recommend using layers of asphalt felt (a 15-pound one will do just fine). They should be overlapping by around 3 inches and should be tucked down together with a staple gun. Make sure you remember the positioning of the floor joists as the wood boards have to be placed perpendicularly to them.

Measure the room’s length and width from wall to wall to establish the centerline, which is going to be the benchmark through the wood floor laying process. Mark the centerline with white chalk. Choose a wall to start from – preferably the one opposite the door to allow for more convenience. Measure a 0.5 inch distance from the wall and mark the line with the chalk. This space has to be left empty to provide for the wood’s expansion due to the inner environment. Eventually the gap should be covered by base shoe.

Choose the longest board to place first and drill holes for 1.5 inch nails in it each above the respective joist. Then nail the row to the joists under it using a hammer. The positioning of the holes should be near the wall, so that they can then be covered by the shoe base. It is important to nail the first three rows by hand. Drill holes for 1.5 inch nails at a 45 to 60 degree angle through the tongues above the respective joists. The pilot holes should be drilled starting from each side of the board and with a 10 inch distance between each one. Again use hammer to nail the board.

For laying the subsequent rows of wood flooring you can use a flooring nailer, which will give you the right angle for positioning the holes and hammering the nails. It has to be placed onto the board’s tongue and when it is stable, simply strike with the hammer for the 2 inch nail through the tongue and the joist. The nails should be hammered through each respective joist and half way between each joist into the subfloor space to ensure stability. It is a good idea to adjust every second row to the previous one by using a small piece of wood board, attach it to the row and rap it with the hammer to allow for tighter positioning.
