So, you're interested in building a carport? It can be an excellent project for an empty weekend, and a carport protects your possessions from those pesky birds. Of course, building your own carport requires some construction knowledge and a few tools. You can either rent the tools from a local hardware store, or borrow them from a neighbor or family member. Whichever way you do it, you can be assured that you will be building yourself something a lot cheaper than if employing a builder to do the job.

Before you start building, you need to check local building regulations. Also, you'll need to make sure your digging won't interfere with any gas, sewer, or water lines. Hitting any of these can cause some serious problems.

The first thing you want to do is dig the post holes. You need to dig 3 for each side. For this, obviously, you're going to need a post hole digger. You will want your posts to be at least 9 feet apart.

Once the holes are done, put the posts in the holes you made, and insure that they are vertically straight. You can use a string line for this. After you do this, pour concrete into the holes to secure them.

Now, you're going to need to trim your posts. The rear posts should be about 8 feet higher than the ground and the front posts should be 4 inches higher than that. Use a spirit level to ensure they are correctly trimmed.

Now, you need to trim two beams. These need to be 20 feet, with 1 foot hanging out front and 1 in back. You will need to cut a 45 degree angle on both ends. Clamp the beams where you would like them, and once you are sure they are in the right place, get your drill out and secure them.

After them beams, you need to cut two rafters. These should be 10 inches long, and also need 45 degree angles on each end. You need to nail the rafters level with the beams and then set these in place with galvanized angle brackets. Now you need to cut 6 more rafters. These need to be spaced 3 feet apart.

At this point, all that is left to do is put the roof on. You can use whichever material you choose to. Now, all that's left to do is nail on your roof of choice. Also, you may want to paint the wooden areas of your new carport.
Now you can stand back and enjoy your handiwork!
