How to fix boards or panels to frames
Panels are used to cover frames when making doors, wardrobes or room dividers. The frames are can be in the form of a groove or rebates. The location of the frame is what will determine the the method of fixing. This can be flush mounting with the frame, using rebates cut on the frame. Also cleats or a dadoes can be used to hold the boards in place. This panels can be made of chip boards, medium density fibre board, gypsum, ply wood, veneer, soft or block board.
The fixing of boards or panels should be done with the function of the frame in mind. The work is usually carried out by a joiner. The flush fixing can be done with tacks or adhesives due to aesthetics on the exposed surface. The should be erected and fastened together so as to secure the panels. They should also be fair finished. this is to allow only the final to be applied once the boards are fixed. The grooves should be cut to allow adjustments during the fixing of the panels.
The fixing of panels using flush mounting starts by measuring it to the frame. It should be flush all round the frame structure. Tack pins or panel pins are then nailed to fasten it to the structure. This is ideal for cabinet or wardrobe backs. This means that the frame is not visible from the outside. It is used with gypsum, block boards and veneer. The finish is then applied to match the rest of the structure. when using cleats, ensure that they are cut flush with the frame for beauty after finishing.
Other panels can be fixed using the grooves to secure the panels. The grooves are cut throughout the framework. This is usually a quarter inch slot. The joiner should cut the frame work joints at forty five degrees. The panel is slid into the slot and allowed to rest without any pressure mounted on it. After the boards are in place, the top most bit of the frame is then pushed gently into place. after it is pushed to alignment, tack or panel pins are nailed to secure the boards inside. A desired finishing is then done to complete the work.
