Hot Air Welding

A mig welding gun is what is used for when you are wire feed welding or mig welding.

It has to feed the wire through from the spool and allow the welding power to reach the contact tip so that you can actually weld with it. When you are using a welding or shielding gas the mig gun also has to supply it to the welding arc.

There aren't too many different types of mig welding guns out there, with the most common brands being:

• Tweco
• Bernard
• Binzel
• OTC Daihen

Each and every mig welding gun serves the same purpose that the other brand of mig gun does. Althoughsome brands are far better than others.

When buying a mig welding gun don't be tempted to buy a mig welding gun that is bigger than what you probably need to get. It all comes down to how hot you are going to be welding and for how long.

I have to say that the most common size and amperage rating of a welding torch would have to be somewhere between the 300 to 350amp range, with the length of the torch being about 4.5m or 15 foot.

And these days the most common fitting at the end of the welding torch where it screws onto the welding machine is in the euro fitting.

So if you are looking to buy a mig welding torch I would suggest going for a high-quality name brand torch that can offer you excellent performance in both wire feedability smoothness, gas flow coverage, long consumable life and be of a lightweight and flexible design.

If you are welding full time doing long shifts you do not want to be holding on to a heavy welding gun for eight or ten hours. Or worse off have your employees making a claim against you for RSI or something.

And then there is the choice of whether you buy a genuine torch or a copy torch. Personally I believe because a mig welding gun is so important to making successful consistent welds, I can only suggest to always buy a genuine mig welding gun.

Some mig guns will either have a push on nozzle or a screw on nozzle with a thread. Quite often the push on nozzles will over time get loose, and they will fall off the end of the welding gun. The contact tip will not remain centered in the nozzle which will lead to the wire arcing to the side of the nozzle. The gas flow will be interrupted and porosity can start happening.

Contact tips are another area where consumable life varies greatly. Once again you can buy genuine contact tips or you can skimp a few cents and buy copy tips.

You might save a few pennies by buying a cheaper contact tip at the start but quite often when you sit down and work it out using genuine contact tips are better. This is especially true as there is a lot of rubbish coming in from China and India and all of those other places. The problem is that the quality of these consumables are absolutely shocking.
