Only people who have done serious sanding can know how important quality is in a power sanding tool. Unbalanced, difficult to hold onto and control belt sanders can and often do lead to gouges that in turn lead to more work. Now add on a poorly designed belt system and the sad song gets even worse.
At 14 Inches It is a Big Sander
This particular unit, at 14 inches, is the largest and most powerful Makita belt sander in their entire lineup. It's a real beast, so if you're looking for the type of sander that can cover a lot of territory and cover it well, this may be the power tool to foot the bill.
11 Amp Motor Makes it the Most Powerful Makita Belt Sander
At the same time, even with its powerful 11 amp motor, 24 x 4 inch belt, and 1,600 ft per min speed it is relatively easy to control and comfortable to use. Of course a lot of credit for that also goes to the sensibly designed front ball grip, 360º swivel dust bag, and new cord position. It's attached at the front of the back handle, so it isn't dragging off the back.
Double Insulated to Keep Your Hands Cool
So with all that power and feet per minute, it's a good thing that this workhorse is double insulated to keep your hands cool, but at the same time, at 12 1/2 pounds it is a bit on the heavy side. Particularly if you're used to working with a lower powered sander. Remember that an 11 amp motor does add some weight.
Designed for Flush Sanding Against Walls
One more added plus for this tool, is that it's designed for flush sanding up against walls and that one feature alone comes in real handy. That is unless you like hand sanding the little strip that other poorly designed sanders leave. Then there's Makitas sensible belt changing and tracking system that means you get to spend more time sanding, and less time screwing with the belt.
