No matter what kind of kitchen sink you have you may eventually want or need to have it replaced. If you have a drop in, also known as a self rimming sink then you have the simplest situation as far as a replacement goes. With this type, it can actually be just a DIY type project. You simply cut loose the silicone seal that is around your existing sink and then lift it out of the hole. Next, just place the new one into the hole, place silicone around the perimeter and you are done.
If you have an undermount sink then your project just got a good bit harder. For starters, you have to climb into the cabinet and undo all of the holding clamps from under the countertop. Be careful not to let it crash down onto your face. This really hurts! It pays to work out some type of catching apparatus, a stand, a cradle or something. Then you will be battling for the space under the cabinet. It's not impossible but it is more difficult than most DIY projects. Most homeowners choose to hire out for this type of job.
If you are wanting to change your undermount to another type of sink that is a different model than the one you just removed, then you have a new challenge to deal with. Chances are, the hole that is in your countertop will only fit the one that was there and will not be the exact shape and size to accommodate the new one that you have chosen. This presents a special new challenge. Do you just abandon your desire for a new sink? Do you buy a whole new countertop just so you can have a new one?
If you have solid surface countertops you can have the cutout altered to fit any sink your heart desires. If you have granite, quartz or marble, you are just stuck with the sink cutout dimensions that you have. The same goes with laminate countertops.
