At some stage you are going to need to make holes in stuff, and that means drilling. Yes you need a good drill (a nice Bosch will do you just fine) but when it comes down to it, it's all about the bit.
Here's what bits you should use for what materials.
For metal you need HSS (high speed steel) bits, a partially ground tip are best for non-ferrous metals (Basically aluminium, copper, brass, zinc, iron and non-alloyed steel). Bits made of cobalt-alloyed High Speed Steel (HSS-E) or even bits with titanium coating are needed for stainless steel. They are more expensive than normal HSS bits but they allow you to drill special steel without a high level of drill bit wear.
For wood you will need Brad point bits which have a long centring tip with two pre-cutting spurs. These spurs score the wood fibres and the internal cutting edges then cut them out cleanly. Forstner drill bits, hardware bits or hinge cutting bits are usually used for larger drill bit diameters and there are auger bits for deep holes in wood.
And for masonry made of clinker, brick or concrete you will need an impact drill or a rotary hammer. However, if the wall consists of perforated stones with porous material, only rotary drilling is need (i.e. without impact). The same applies to porous bricks and boarded walls. A masonry bit is needed for all work in these materials. It has soldered-in tungsten-carbide plates on the bit tip.

Masonry $111.53 Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar; the term masonry can also refer to the units themselves. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, stone such as marble, granite, travertine, limestone; concrete block, glass block, and tile. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can strongly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. Masonry units, such as brick, tile, stone, glass brick or concrete block generally conform to the requirements specified in the 2006 International Building Code (IBe Section 2103. John Yarker and Albert Pike later produced their own versions of these degrees, but heres a chance to see what they were like before being reworked. Mortar (Masonry) $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Mortar is a workable paste used to bind construction blocks together and fill the gaps between them. The blocks may be stone, brick, cinder blocks, etc. Mortar becomes hard when it sets, resulting in a rigid aggregate structure. Modern mortars are typically made from a mixture of sand, a binder such as cement or lime, and water. Mortar can also be used to fix, or point, masonry when the original mortar has washed away. The first mortars were made of mud and clay. Because of a lack of stone and an abundance of clay, Babylonian constructions were of baked brick, using lime or pitch for mortar. According to Roman Ghirshman, the first evidence of humans using a form of mortar was at the ziggurat of Sialk in Iran, built of sundried bricks in 2900 BC. The Chogha Zanbil Temple in Iran was built in about 1250 BC with kilnfired bricks and a strong mortar of bitumen. Masonry in Compression $167.53 This work focuses on the role of the brickmortar interaction in masonry under compression. The mortar joint, as an interface between units, is formed during the brick laying process and positioning of the unit and usually acts as a weak spot. The program with over 200 tests included six claybrick types and multiple mortar mix designs. Material properties were derived which can be used in numerical simulations and trends were established. Crack development processes were recorded and post peak behaviour observed. The brickmortar interaction was measured and visualized with novel experimental research techniques such as ESPI a laser speckle instrument and a movable seating arrangement. ESPI was used to investigate the effect of joint thickness and pointing. Clearly the shape of the bed joint affects the strain distribution over the joint and showed that rotation occurred in the brickmortar interface, due to the shape of the bed joint. This study confirms the important role of the brick mortar interface. Author: Vermeltfoort, A. T.
