Measure Meter

Power meters are becoming increasingly more common among triathletes and cyclists alike. However, to use this device to it's fullest capabilities a little learning is in order. This is not a device you simply attach to your bike and let it do the work. You must learn how to use this device and what the data means in order to take full advantage of your investment. A power meter has many advantages to improve your current training program. In addition, if you have a coach who is versed in training with power and who takes the time and attention required to analyze your data this device will begin to shine through as your training progresses. Here are several advantages to using a power meter in your training and racing.

1) Power meters provide a quantifiable measure of your output. Used in combination with a heart rate monitor, which measures your input, you can track your efficiency on the bike. Lower heart rate along with more power implies greater efficiency.

2) Power meters allow you or your coach to track your training stress over time. Don't be put off by the mathematical equations and formulas used in determining your training stress score. Basically, this is a simple measure that is highly accurate in judging how tired you are. Some power meters have the training stress score available in real time which can be very valuable to those who are being coached. Their coach will calculate their alloted training stress value for their bike leg of your triathlon race, in addition to the average power necessary to achieve that score. This will provide real time feedback to the athlete while racing and give you the power of better pacing and allocation of energy output.

3) In training, power meters will help determine your functional threshold power, which is the maximum wattage you can sustain for one hour. From this number your workouts take on greater significance due to the fact that your coach will give you goal wattages to attain during your interval sessions on the bike. Heart rate data will still be useful in terms of how hard you are pushing yourself to attain your goal wattage, but your output (power/wattage) will be the defining construct of your interval training.

To take full advantage of your power meter it is important to understand its full capabilities. This takes time and plenty of reading and studying. However, a good coach who possesses this knowledge and takes the time to analyze your power data can speed you along in the process as well as teach you how to ultimately train yourself.
