Improve your batting mechanics to avoid a slump
"How did I miss that pitch?" Being in a slump can be frustrating and can effect a players game elsewhere in the field. Everyone has been in a slump. There is not a player in the hall of fame that was able to avoid at one time or another. Baseball is a game of adjustments, and if you are unable to adjust to what the pitcher is doing to you...your playing time will eventually drop and it could mean one step out of the game all together. The mental part of it is important, but the physical part can induce a mental block.
So what are some of the things that can go wrong other than mental? Many times when a hitter is slumping, they are opening up their hips too soon trying to crank one into the seats. Once the front hip opens a little bit, the front shoulder follows, the power is lost out of the lower half, and many times the head follows the shoulder and they do not watch the ball all the way. If they do hit it, they are usually going to hit weak ground ball to short (for a right handed hitter) or to second (for a left handed hitter). The number one thing a hitter can do to begin getting his batting mechanics back on track is to try to hit every single pitch back to the pitcher. Another way to think about it is to think of the alleys. Right center and left center. That will keep the front hip and shoulder closed longer and force the batter to wait. They may get jammed, however they will some more power behind the jam shot than a weak ground ball and may squeak a hit out of it.
Alex Rodriguez had a very successful post season last year. Being a Yankee fan (let the groans flow), I have watched his post seasons improve from year to year. The difference last year was he was relaxed and he was driving the ball, for the most part, to the alleys and not pulling off of the ball. He was not getting fooled on off speed pitches and was fast enough to jump on the fast ball.
One drill that works great for this is the fence drill. If you do not know what it is, I will give a quick description. Grab a bat and stand facing a fence. Put the bottom of the bat on your stomach and put the top of the bat on the fence so you are a bat's length away from the fence. Do not move, get in your stance and swing without hitting the fence. The key is to get your hand through first and then have the head of the bat snap through. Doing this over and over will help a batter get the feeling of getting the knob of the bat through the zone first, allowing their hands to stay back and snap at the right time. By keeping the hands back it keeps a batter from getting fooled. When this starts to fall into place, a batters hitting mechanics all of a sudden look better. Before you know it, that confidence is back in your batter and they are having better at bats.

Continuum Mechanics $98.77 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Continuum mechanics is a branch of mechanics that deals with the analysis of the kinematics and the mechanical behavior of materials modeled as a continuum. The French mathematician Augustin Louis Cauchy was the first to formulate such models in the 19th century, but research in the area continues today. Modeling an object as a continuum assumes that the substance of the object completely fills the space it occupies. Modeling objects in this way ignores the fact that matter is made of atoms, and so is not continuous; however, on length scales much greater than that of interatomic distances, such models are highly accurate. Fundamental physical laws such as the conservation of mass, the conservation of momentum, and the conservation of energy may be applied to such models to derive differential equations describing the behavior of such objects, and some information about the particular material studied is added through a constitutive relation. Maximal Velocity Sprint Mechanics (DVD) $35.82 Maximal Velocity Sprint Mechanics offers a comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand analysis of the mechanics and techniques associated with efficient sprinting. The DVD features a detailed explanation and technical breakdown of maximal velocity sprinting that can be easily implemented by coaches to develop their athletes speed. The DVD is appropriate for any coach or athlete interested in enhancing straight-ahead speed. Among the topics covered: fundamental concepts of sprinting, the relationship between stride length and stride frequency, the single most important factor that determines speed, the three primary goals of efficient sprinting mechanics, the role of the arm swing in sprinting, and detailed technical breakdown of optimum sprinting mechanics. |

Scaling Limits in Statistical Mechanics and Microstructures in Continuum Mechanics $109 Collective behavior in systems with many components, blow-ups with emergence of microstructures are proofs of the double, continuum and atomistic, nature of macroscopic systems, an issue which has always intrigued scientists and philosophers. Modern technologies have made the question more actual and concrete with recent, remarkable progresses also from a mathematical point of view. The book focuses on the links connecting statistical and continuum mechanics and, starting from elementary introductions to both theories, it leads to actual research themes. Mathematical techniques and methods from probability, calculus of variations and PDE are discussed at length. |

Hitting Mechanics (DVD) $39.99 With Jim Dietz, former San Diego State University Head Coach, ABCA Hall of Fame 2002Coach Dietz won over 1200 games in his 31 years of coaching and was known for tremendous statistics in the win/loss column, in his athlete's excellent academics, and for creating numerous opportunities for his players. He was the college coach to many future "big league" hitting sensations, including Tony Gwynn, Mark Grace and Travis Lee. In this excellent video, Dietz shares his wisdom and experience in order to help you get the most out of what a hitter has and, using what they already have, mold them into a more constant hitter (versus changing everything that the hitter already does). In this on-field demonstration video, Dietz shows how to recognize the inside pitch, the outside pitch, a fastball, and a change up and how to use this to create a constant swing. Having a constant swing will allow your hitter to use all fields and go with pitches. Also emphasized: teaching players to hit with their hands and proper stride length. This is a great hitting video! 55 minutes. 2003. |

Models of Understanding in Newtonian Mechanics $125.85 Diagnostic science assessments seek to draw inferences about student understanding by eliciting evidence about the mental models that underlie students reasoning about physical systems. Measurement techniques for analyzing data from such assessments embody one of two contrasting assessment programs: learning progressions and facetbased assessments. The research presented here provides a systematic comparison of these two approaches, which is of great practical value to assessment programs that seek to employ small clusters of related items for the purpose of measuring depth of understanding. Specifically, models were compared on modeldata fit, diagnostic reliability, diagnostic certainty, and predictive accuracy. In addition, the effects of test length were evaluated for both models in order to inform the number of items required to obtain adequately reliable diagnoses of understanding. Lastly, changes in student understanding over time were studied with a longitudinal model in order to provide educators and curriculum developers with a sense of how students advance in understanding over the course of instruction.
