Mercury Vapor

With energy costs continuing to rise nationwide many commercial facility managers are looking for ways to reduce their operational costs and while one of their largest expenses is lighting the consideration of replacing those lighting fixtures can be cost prohibitive. Large warehouses, manufacturing facilities and the like have hundreds if not thousands of high intensity discharge lighting fixtures otherwise known as HID lighting that individually can use 1000 watts or more per fixture. Many of these managers are opting to have their lighting systems retrofitted with what is known as a HID Lighting Manager or Controller which can greatly reduce their energy usage and slash costs by up to 50% per fixture. Retrofitting has a far more appealing price tag and given the versatility of these controllers which can control any combination of lighting fixture types in large numbers they offer energy savings for the entire building.

At the heart of the HID Lighting Manager is an intelligent microprocessor, capable of sensing the various lamp types, determining the most efficient use for each lamp type, and initiating the proper voltage for each. The HID Lighting Manager unit is built with a magnetic transformer, controlled by a PLC (programmable logic controller) with Intellisense technology. This PLC enables the user to control the lighting levels while maintaining the sine wave, eliminating harmonics and maintaining the proper power factor. These microprocessor-controlled HID Lighting Controllers have the ability to control the wattage range in different industrial lighting applications. This includes Mercury Vapor, Metal Halide, High and Low Pressure Sodium. The energy savings achieved can be significant, reducing energy costs and, at the same time, helping to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses into the environment.

These systems can be used a great many locations and this is just a short list:  Organic farms, street lighting, highways, bridges, tunnels, parking areas, indoor and outdoor garages, industrial buildings, plants, warehouses, factories, large showrooms,  hospitals, care facilities, correctional facilities, museums,  shopping malls, large retail stores, casinos,  schools, university, colleges, educational facilities, government buildings,  condominiums, rental properties, high-rise buildings,  sport facilities, ice rinks, soccer fields, baseball diamonds,  all indoor sporting facilities (pools, tennis, fitness club etc.) We all know that many of these types of lighting systems come with a very large power cost and it is the poor power factor of the electrical distribution that causes these costs to be far higher than they need to be. The HID Lighting Manager is capable of  greatly improving this power factor to reduce the power required to energize these systems. They are also capable of being able to power these various lighting fixtures at full power to get the lamp through its warm-up period and then throttling back the power to a much lower operational level saving vast amounts of otherwise wasted energy without sacrificing the amount of light each fixture emits throughout the lighting circuit.
