As the economy makes it harder to do our jobs many engineers have discovered that they do not need to use the high priced classical 316 Stainless Steel mass flow meters or mass flow controllers to do the work that a lower pressure and therefore lower cost instrument can accomplish.

Specifically, most engineers have discovered is that they do not need 316 Stainless steel meters or controllers rated at 500 PSIG when they can use a lower cost meter or controller that can do the same job as the higher cost 316 units, using the same sensor, but rated at 150 PSIG.

Indeed, many applications require pressure ratings of over 150 PSIG but I have discovered that MOST R&D applications usually have bottle pressure set at somewhere around 30 PSIG. The factor of safety is something over 5.0 when you use a 150 PSIG rated device for 30 PSIG.

So why do folks STILL insist on buying a $3000 Mass Flow Controller or a $2000 Mass Flow Meter for an inert gas at 30 PSG when a $900 model will do the same? The answer is very simple... TRADITION, like Fiddler on The Roof!. Yes, TRADITION! Tradition! Sounds funny but in my dealings with hundreds of engineers I have come to learn that those who understand the choices usually opt for the lower cost units.

The smartest engineers have figured they can almost get three of the lower cost units for the price of one of the standard 316 Stainless units! As a result they have spares and minimize down time.

So, why don't many engineers change? In my experience it is mostly because the companies who sell thermal mass flow meters and thermal mass flow controllers LOVE to sell the expensive units! While I like the idea of pushing the "value leader" I feel it is not a bad idea to give the user the choice.

As such, I offer the following: If you need to measure the flow of a gas that is less than 150 PSIG then consider using a lower pressure rating device. Then, you must consider the compatability issue of the gas you are using and the material of construction of the meter. If you are using an inert gas then just about any material of construction will work. If you are using a caustic gas then it is important to determine the compatability of the device with that gas.

Every company offers compatability charts for nearly EVERY gas on the planet.

In closing, the next time you specify a thermal mass flow meter for an inert gas running at less than 150 PSIG how about considering a lower cost unit and perhaps buy TWO so you have a spare?
