The fountain pen use to be a very popular writing tool in its day. Now it is often seen as a "lost art" with the simplification of our writing tools and the massive use of desktop computers and portable laptops over handwriting. However, there is always comes a time in your life when something has to be handwritten, from a simple signature to a long written personal letter. So now you are interested in getting your first fountain pen, but where to begin? Honestly don't get overwhelmed. Once you figure out a few simple things, the rest is just personal preference and style. You can keep it simple for your first pen in order to see if its something you wish to continue.

Some important factors you will want to look into are weight, size, tip(nib), and pricing. When speaking size, we mostly are talking about its diameter, make sure it is not too bulky or too slim. Also, the weight can be a factor, if it feels too heavy you will get tired of writing with it. The other important part would be the tip of the fountain pen or the "Nib". You can find a few specific nib styles to accommodate your writing style such as the italic nib. This is used for more a calligraphy and italic style of writing. Oblique nibs are made more so for left handed people but are also used by right handed people looking for more of a thicker stroke or perhaps trying to write in a Devanagari or Arabic font. You can try out more than one to see what you like. Price wise, you do not need an expensive pen in order to benefit from a fountain pen. However, quality is always a great thing as with a solid fountain pen you can probably use the same one the rest of your days.
