One of the things I've learned during my career as a repairman is the importance of tool organization. Few things are more frustrating than trying to find the one tool you need to complete a job. Over the years as a serviceman, I've worked out a system for keeping my tools organized. Now it's probable the type of work I do differs from most but I hope that you can use some of my ideas for yourself.

Most of the work I do is light residential type repair work. I service air conditioning systems, plumbing fixtures and appliances. I use a wide variety of tools but I have separated them into a few different categories and I have tool bags for each. Most home improvement stores have a great variety of tools boxes and bags.

The first category is the tools I use most. These are the tools I have found that I need for the majority of repairs. For the most part these tools are screw drivers, nut drivers and a variety of wrenches. This bag of tools is the one I carry when I enter an apartment or home. It's small and lightweight and gets the job done most of the time.

My secondary bag has slightly larger but less used items in it. It has a cordless drill, socket sets, electrical meter and other things in it. Beyond that, I have a plumbing bag which has pipe wrenches, a basin wrench, pipe thread compound and other various plumbing tools and supplies. I also have an electrical box with wire crimping tools, more advanced meters, wire nuts etc.

The benefit of all my various tools bags is to not only have what I need but also be able to find it. I've always thought that the two big components of getting the job done is getting the tools and parts there and then actually doing the work.

While working on a project, it is not always easy to know what parts you will have to have, but with a little practice and some organization, you will always have the proper tools on hand.
