When you are thinking about purchasing a skid steer loader for your business it may come as a surprise but there are really two main types of skid steers to choose from. These types of machines differ from one another by what is running their machine; tires or tracks. The most popular of the two options are tires, however, these tracked loaders are gaining popularity as people have started to figure out that in certain applications they can be more productive than a wheeled machine.
So how do you choose between a wheeled loader and a track loader? The first step and probably the most important is to look at what application you will be running your machine in on a daily basis. The reason why this is so important is that tracks work very well in some applications and they will end up costing you a lot of money in maintenance in other applications. If you are working in an application with a lot of rocks, steel, metal, tree stumps, etc, you will want to think twice about using tracks. The reason being is that these track loaders have undercarriage that is made up of rubber that can rip, tear, cut, slice, when used in rough underfoot conditions. It will be much better to have tires in this application because tires will be much easier and less expensive to replace than an undercarriage.
However, if you will be working in conditions that have little to no rocks, steel, branches, and other debris, you are better off using tracks. Tracks will allow you to work in more weather conditions that tires and overall you will be more productive with your machine because you can work it more days of the year. For example, one application that is almost perfect for a track loader is landscaping. They are usually working in light underfoot conditions and will not have to worry about massive damage to the tracks.
Another thing to think about when trying to decide between wheels and tracks are the maintenance practices of your crew who will be running the machine. It is very important that at the end of every shift that the tracks be well cleaned with a pressure washer to inhibit the build up of mud and dirt that can harden and cause damage to the undercarriage. It is best to be honest with yourself about how well you maintain your equipment because this will save you a lot of money in the long run.
