There is perhaps no resource on Earth as valuable to us as water. It may make up two-thirds of the planet but clean water is highly precious and too many people in the world often go without enough.

In the West we take it for granted that when we turn on the tap fresh, clean for drinking but its delivery does come with a cost to both our pockets and the environment. Furthermore, during the summer months even in westernised countries like the UK, the table gets dangerously low and its not uncommon for hosepipe bans and other rationing to be introduced.

Ensuring water is clean and fit to be used around our homes is a costly, complicated and has a detrimental effect on the environment. Recycling takes energy and chemicals such as chlorine, both of which are not good for the environment.

Saving it should be a concern for every householder, not just those trying to live in a green and environmentally friendly way. With the growing use of metres, wasting it costs us financially as well as costing the planet.

But saving water doesn't mean we shouldn't wash ourselves or clothes as much as we do - that would be preposterous but huge savings can be made in both the environmental impact and the cost of our bills.

Simple things like showering instead of taking baths and making sure the washing machine is full before we turn it on will go a long way in helping reduce our consumption but there are other methods too.

Water monitors are a great idea. A water saving monitor can not only time your use ensuring you don't spend too long in the shower but they can also show you exactly how much you are using.
