How to Install Roofing Tiles and Shingles
When looking to make your roof more resistant to the elements, installing tile roofing may be your best bet. This allows the roof to drain away from the home and preventing potential water damage. Tile and other materials such as shingle roofing can be installed to achieve damage prevention. This can be done yourself, although it requires a fair amount of knowledge to attempt. The following information gives you a thorough look at different parts of the roofing structure and the materials and strategies that protect it, as well as approaches to install roof materials.
Installing tiles: Pieces of tile roof are installed individually, while battens align them correct along the roof. Begin the process of roof installation by starting at the eave risers and working upwards on the roof. Be sure not to overdrive the nails, for this increases the risk of cracking the tile. Put in gable end titles where the gable ceases, layer them shingle-style up the roof. Every gable end title should cover the nails fastening the previous gable tile. Install ridge tiles on the appropriate ridges. Make sure that the ridge tiles also cover the nails used to cover previous ridge tiles. The work it takes to install tiles may be daunting, but it's worth it in protecting your home.
Installing shingles: Shingle roof is installed in sheets; tabs are cut out along the bottom of each sheet. These tabs are what's exposed to the weather and provide shingles their distinctive patterns. Install the starter course of shingles at the eaves. Make sure to cut them lengthwise so that the adhesive is at the edge of the roof. Also note that the starter course goes over the outer edge of the drip edge no more than half an inch. The first row of shingles also shouldn't extend more than half an inch over the same perimeter. The shingles should be layered from the eaves towards the ridge, nailed accordingly with the manufacturer's instructions (four nails per shingle are standard). Finish by installing the ridge shingles, working them from the ridge towards the center. The labor it takes to install shingles may seem a bit much, but serves as a way to both stylize and protect your home.
Other means of protection: There are other methods to prevent roofing damage beyond tile and shingles. Drip edges, for example, protect roofing by allowing water to drain away from the home. Exposing the home to water is a gateway to disaster, whether it be leaks or mold growth. Roofing can further be protected from the elements by roofing underlayment. The water that penetrates the exterior roofing will be washed away by the underlayment. Self-sticking underlayment are useful in cold climates where ice may melt and attempt to move within the roof. These principles are simple yet crucial in the process of protecting one's home from the elements.
If you don't feel that you can do the work yourself, consider hiring an experienced contractor to do the work for you. Protecting your home is simply too important to be left undone.

Green Roof Plants $35 In just a few years, green roofs have gone from a horticultural curiosity to a booming growth industry — primarily because the environmental benefits of extensively planted roofs are now beyond dispute, whether for industrial or governmental complexes or for private homes in urban or suburban settings. Despite the high level of interest in green roofs, until now there has been no reliable reference devoted exclusively to the various species of drought-tolerant plants that are suitable for use on extensive green roofs. Green Roof Plants fills that void. The book contains photographs and cultural information for more than 200 species and cultivars of plants, including valuable data on moisture needs, heat tolerance, hardiness, bloom color, foliage characteristics, and height. Concise, accurate, and easy to use, this book is destined to become an indispensable practical reference guide, not just for architects, landscape designers, engineers, and environmentalists, but also for environmentally conscious home gardeners. |

Sod Roof $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A sod roof or turf roof is a traditional Scandinavian type of green roof covered with sod on top of several layers of birch bark on gently sloping wooden roof boards. Until the late 19th century it was the most common roof on rural log houses in large parts of Scandinavia. Its distribution roughly corresponds to the distribution of the log building technique in the vernacular architecture of Finland and the Scandinavian peninsula. The load of approximately 250 kg per m of a sod roof is an advantage because it helps to compress the logs and make the walls more draughtproof. In winter the total load may well increase to 400 or 500 kg per m because of snow. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. The Green Roof Manual $39.95 Green roofs the ultimate in sustainable building practices continue to generate enormous interest and enthusiasm among architects, landscape designers, and urban planners. Increasingly strict stormwater regulations and the appeal of LEED-related projects have also boosted the popularity and desirability of green roofs. Those who want to build green roofs, however, have few resources to guide them. Until now, no book has taken a comprehensive look at how to effectively adapt green-roof technology to the variable and extreme North American climate, and how to design projects that will function and endure as successfully as those in Germany, Switzerland, and other European countries. This book fills the gap by providing an overview of practices and techniques that have been effective in North America. The authors offer options regarding structure, function, horticulture, and logistics, as well as surveys of actual projects and analyses of why they have or haven't succeeded. Approachable and reader-friendly, the manual clearly explains how these complex systems function and how to plan and carry out projects successfully from concept through construction and maintenance. Ideally suited to professionals (including architects, landscape architects, engineers, and designers) and their clients, it brings together key lessons from leaders in the field. Numerous photographs highlight the range of design possibilities and show green roofs both during construction and at various stages of maturity. At last, those seeking basic information about how to design and build green roofs have a concise, authoritative guide to this exciting new technology. |
