The Toshiba Tg02 Updates The Landmark Tg01

The recent 2010 Mobile World Congress announced and demoed some new and exciting mobile phones we can expect to see in the stores starting next month   While many of the upscale smartphones offer cutting edge technologies in entire novel packaging, some positioned as new are actually just the same old handsets in newer housing or have marginal improvements over what they are meant to supercede.

One of them is from Toshiba which offers a update to the TG01 smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.5 it released in June last year.  And you guess it right, it's the Toshiba TG02, a very logical name for a successor.  And the name is very apt.  Just as it merely gets a 1 digit numerical increment, so does the feature set get incremental improvement.

Apart for using a capacitive touchscreen that is hampered by an OS that has no native support for the feature, you get a slightly smaller and 10 gram lighter body. Apart from that, the TG02 is the same TG01.

At a glance

The TG02 is powered by the mighty 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that put the TG01 in the map as the first Snapdragon smartphone.  It comes with the same 256 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM.  You get the usual micro SD expandability for up to 16 GB.  It's the same 3G smartphone on the dual band UMTS/HSDDPA/HSUPA radio and a 2G phone on the quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G. You also get the same  WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP and USB2.0 for high speed local data connectivity richness.

The TG01 also had one of the largest displays for a smartphone when it was released.  That is carried into the TG02 with the same 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen with 65k color support.  As indicated above, it now uses capacitive touchscreen technology instead of resistive which is sad really, considering that the Windows Mobile 6.5 works best in resistive touchscreens.

It has no native support for capacitive, a complaints that is addressed by the new Windows Phone 7 Series. It is good to know Toshiba is promising an upgrade path to it so you can max out the capacitive touchscreen technology. It has the usual accelerometer for auto rotate and shake control.

The TG01 imaging suffered with a mediocre 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera.  Toshiba hasn't lifted a finger to improve on this so now, not only will you get the same mediocre digital camera, you are also getting an outdated one.  It has the geo tagging thanks to its A-GPS support. About the only consolation is that you still get the same superb VGA video recording at 30fps. It has the same secondary VGA camera for video calls that can do video recording at a QVGA resolution and 15fps.

You also get to enjoy the same SatNav functionality with its GPS receiver for A-GPS and QuickGPS. Battery power is on the low side with a modest 1000 mAh Li-Ion battery for up to 5 hours of talk time and 275 hours in standby mode.

Software-wise, the Toshiba TG02 uses a new and more stable 3D UI ported to the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. You get the same social networking apps for updating your Facebook and uploading files on media sharing sites like YouTube.  There's also the same document viewer for PDF and MS Office files as well as usual email client apps and WAP 2.0 HTML web browser support.
