The Last National Service Man $25.62 National service was not voluntary for men in the UK in 1958. All men over eighteen who were medically fit and not in a restricted occupation were called up as it was termed for two years. You had no choice unless you liked prison that is. Similarly you had no choice of which service you went into either. I cannot for instance think why I would have chosen the RAF. No relative of mine had served in the RAF, and I had never been in an aeroplane. I actually started my national service on the second of December 1958 and actually finished my service in January 1962. So on the second of December I became 5065237 A.C. U.T. Bryant. Or Bryant 237 for short. I was no longer a person with a first name or even the title Mr. While technically I suppose I was not actually the very last national service man called up, I was in one of the last batches. The following is a personal view of my service looked at from a lighthearted, nonmilitary viewpoint. I hope you enjoy it. Selective Service $9.99 Personnel: Robert Pollard (vocals).Selective Service is a collection of three limited-edition vinyl singles (all out of print) that were available via the Fading Captain Series label, an imprint devoted to the prolific output of Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices). First up is GBV's live rendition of "Dayton, Ohio-19 Something and 5," a melancholic look back at the easygoing days of old that first appeared on the classic Pollard/Tobin Sprout team-up, Tonics and Twisted Chasers. The three home demo recordings that follow feature Pollard alone with an acoustic guitar, and are easily the most intimate recordings he has released in years. Although this occurrence may cause the fanatical to salivate at the thought of Bee Thousand-era lo-fi brilliance, there's just as much focus on his intricate plucking (who knew he was such a fine guitarist?) as there is on melody, with nary a chorus to be found. The two Airport Five 45s include the best songs culled from the disappointing Tower in the Fountain of Sparks (the immensely catchy tunes "Total Exposure" and "Stifled Man Casino), the first Pollard/Sprout collaboration since Tonics and Twisted Chasers. Both "Total Exposure" and one of its B-sides, "Cold War Water Sports," contain imagery of children at play (more longing for carefree times), while "The Wheel Hits the Path (Quite Soon)" possesses a quintessential Pollard lyric, where the context is inconsequential ("like a hairspray party at the wind tunnel"). The remaining B-sides are largely forgettable ("Eskimo Clockwork" is a wordless number that features Sprout banging away at the piano, and suffers from Pollard's absence). The real jewel is the psychedelic "In the Brain," a previously unavailable track that betters most of the material found on Tower in the Fountain of Sparks. ~ Bart Bealmear |

Doom Service $3.99 It happened in Hotel Duarte, a bullet length from the Great White Way, where life begins at eight-fortyand often ends by midnight with a couple of murders. For instance, the murder of a dumb welterweight who took his diveand got paid off in lead. He was the brother of Johnny Killain's gal, and that was pure bad luck for the fight mobbecause Killain went in swinging with no referee to call him off. This great big deadly weapon of a man knew every dirty punch ever inventedand he would use them all to find the killer |

Distinguished Service $45 Walter J. Kohler, Jr. was one of Wisconsin's best governors. Elected three times, he played a role in the election of Dwight D. Eisenhower to the presidency in 1952 and was known to be an administration favorite. Kohler's challenge was to unite moderate Republicans, who backed Ike, with a Far Right that fervently supported Senator Joe McCarthy. His inability to please both wings of the Republican Party eventually cost him an election race for the United States Senate. In 1957 he was unexpectedly defeated by William Proxmire, a long-time Democratic Party rival and indefatigable campaigner. But Kohler was more than a politician. His biography involves the highly unusual story of the Kohler Company in Wisconsin, site, at the same time, of one of the most enlightened managerial policies ever attempted and the longest labor dispute in American history. Kohler's story sheds light on the life and times of the upper class in the 1920s and 1930s, reveals his heroic role in the Second World War, and provides path breaking insight into his talent for effective and prosperous business activity. A very private man with several secrets, Kohler said little about his past. Now, for the first time, we have the definitive biography, based in part on hitherto closed family documents, photos, and interviews with friends and acquaintances. It is a book that should find a large audience of serious readers. |

Active Service $45.45 MARJORY walked pensively along the hall. In the cool shadows made by the palms on the window ledge, her face wore the expression of thoughtful melancholy expected on the faces of the devotees who pace in cloistered gloom. She halted before a door at the end of the hall and laid her hand on the knob. She stood hesitating, her head bowed. It was evident that this mission was to require great fortitude. At last she opened the door. Father, she began at once. There was disclosed an elderly, narrowfaced man seated at a large table and surrounded by manuscripts and books. The sunlight flowing through curtains of Turkey red fell sanguinely upon the bust of deadeyed Pericles on the mantle. A little clock was ticking, hidden somewhere among the countless leaves of writing, the maps and broad heavy tomes that swarmed upon the table.
