The Importance of Masonry Drill Bits

If you are not familiar with masonry drill bits, then you may not know exactly what they are or what purpose they serve. However, they have proven to be an essential tool for anyone who works with any type of masonry, even on a casual basis. They can be very versatile if used correctly and can even help a metal hole saw effectively create holes through masonry without any chipping or breaking. The type or size of the bit that you will need will largely depend on the project as different types of masonry can have very different densities and breaking points.

In general, masonry drill bits are carbide-tipped and are predominately used with a power drill. Depending on the project, it could be either a twist drill or hammer drill. However, it is important to note that bits designed for a twist drill will not fit on a rotary hammer drill, so make sure to plan ahead. The term masonry refers to anything that is held together by mortar, such as concrete, tile, stone, etc. Mortar is a paste that is of made from sand, cement, and water. If the hole that you need to create is large enough, masonry bits can be used to pre-drill a guide hole for the arbor on a metal hole saw.

Masonry drill bits can be very precise and accurate as long as the drill is being used correctly. If you need even more precision or your drill does not provide enough torque, then a diamond core bit might be just the attachment you need. This will provide additional precision and accuracy. However, it is important to use this type of bit at a lower speed in order to minimize the risk of damaging the masonry. It is also important to note that even at lower speeds; the friction can create an immense amount of heat. For drilling deeper holes, some type of lubrication may be necessary.

As with all drill bits, it is important that you always check your masonry drill bits for wear and tear before you use them. If the bit becomes overly worn, it can dramatically affect the precision and create larger holes, which is very detrimental if you are drilling some type of anchor. If you are doing so on a regular basis, then they should be considered an essential tool, however even a casual user can benefit from having them in the tool box. The second question is how efficient do you want to be. If you opt to not use bits designed specifically for masonry, then it will take much longer to drill each hole because you will need to drill at a much slower speed to prevent cracking or breaking. Plus, spending a small amount on masonry drill bits can allow you to use other tools that you already have like a metal hole saw instead of buying hole saw blades and arbors designed for masonry.
