Each year the new and improved models of the golf club comes to the marketplace. It has evolved into the ultimate tool for playing the game. What remains is the challenge for designers and engineers to continue to find ways to improve the golf club other than cosmetic change.
With the invention of cast iron perimeter weighted clubs surpassing the standard forged club both in popularity and expense, to lighter stronger steel and graphite shafts, and then better and softer rubber grips, the manufacturers were getting closer to building the perfect golf club. Then by fine tuning the process of casting to create a more dense and stronger metal, along with the ability to stamp out forged clubs, they were on their way to achieving their goal. Different metal one year, different shaft the next, all contributing to the new and improved models of the golf club.
The club makers went a step farther. They built a mechanical testing machine, so they could control all the variables, and still supply power on a perfect swing plane to test the clubs reactions at various speeds. After realizing that the human body cannot swing like the machine, they took their tests to the professional tour players and collected data on all aspects of their swing and body structure. The club builders now could find a standard for all the variations of body structure and match them to the proper golf club, tweaking the specifications of the it for each player.
So on to the next demographic, the golfing public. The players in this category are mainly the ones that the golf club builders are concerned about. Unlike the machines and tour professionals who don't buy golf products, these players make up 95% of the golfing population that do. These players have swings that are so diverse with so many variations on how to hold the club (grip), how to stand (posture), and how to transfer weight, that maybe there is a perfect golf club already out there for them. But with no consistency or ability to swing the same way twice, they may never find it. As a result most of the variation of head design, shaft flex and torque, and grips are designed to compensate their faults so they can just have fun. These are the players that will seek out the new and improved models of the golf club each year.
So the evolution of new and improved models will continue every year. With each club maker claiming their superiority with their products. With all the claims of improvements that are made each year, who knows, maybe sometime in the future someone will make a golf club that will swing itself.
