Since the main virtue of spray painting walls is speed, it's only sensible to choose a means of reaching the heights that allows you to get up, down and along with the minimum of fuss. This means that a scaffold tower, even one on castors, although excellent when you are preparing the surface, is not a particularly good choice for spraying unless you have a suitable flat, hard 'road' running right round the area you wish to paint. A step ladder (or possibly two, spanned by a scaffold board) for the lower levels, and a lightweight, aluminum extension ladder for the rest is generally a better bet.

Having said that, you should not, of course, allow speed to take precedence over safety. It's probably true that as there is no physical contact with the wall, you are less likely to push yourself off balance than you would be if using a brush or roller and that as spraying is quick and easy you are less likely to over- stretch in order to reach that extra little bit before climbing down and moving the ladder along. But don't take any chances Always make sure that the ladder is set at the correct angle on a firm, level footing and that it is roped in place at the top, If necessary, spend an hour or two fixing stout hooks at intervals into the top of the wall to make roping off easier. You'll find they come in handy wherever you need to scale a ladder.

Preparing the site

You should thoroughly prepare the surface so it is clean, dry and sound. In particular, fill any cracks which are wider than about a millimeter with mortar, and check that all rendering is securely adhering to the surface underneath. Also, you should treat dusty surfaces with stabilizing primer and kill off any mould or algae using a proprietary fungicide or algicide.

Masking off will normally be your next step. This can take time and you may feel it rather cancels out the benefits of spraying. This is true to some extent, but wielding a heavy brush can hardly be compared with snipping away at a length of sticky tape.

However, it is possible to do away with masking though you will still need to protect the ground. All you do is stop spraying when you get too close to whatever it is you don't want painted; normally within 300-600mm (1 -2ft). These 'safety zones' can then be painted in using a brush or roller. Do be warned though: a sudden puff of wind or a momentary loss of concentration could have disastrous consequences. If you intend using this technique you should be prepared to have to paint the woodwork and metalwork soon after and to keep some white spirit or water (according to the type of paint) handy to wipe off any spray that strays onto the window panes.
