Turning his back on a lucrative, successful, and hard won professional football career, Tillman answered the call to duty in the wake of 9/11. He and his brother joined the Army, their goal the elite Rangers fighting corps. It was just weeks after Pat married his high school sweetheart, Marie Ugenti. After 28 weeks of training, he was sent to Afghanistan as part of Operation Mountain Storm. The operation's objective was to disrupt and destroy the infrastructure of the al-Qaida terrorist organization and ultimately find Osama bin Laden. On April 22, 2004, Tillman's platoon was ambushed in the early evening near Khost in a mountainous region near the Pakistan border. It was announced that he was killed by the enemy after his heroic leadership helped to move a split section of his platoon to safety but five weeks later, the Army gave a different story, saying he died by probable friendly fire. Shortly after his death, Tillman was promoted from specialist to corporal and awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart. An estimated 3,500 attended a May 3 memorial service in San Jose, one of many tributes to Tillman. "Pat's best service to his country was to remind us all what courage really looks like," Arizona Senator John McCain told the crowd, "and that the purpose of all good courage is love." |

She was named for Senator Benjamin Tillman. Tillman was laid down on 29 July 1918 by the Charleston Navy Yard; launched on 7 July 1918; sponsored by Miss Mary Y. Tillman the granddaughter of Senator Tillman; reclassified DD135 on 17 July 1920, during the Navywide assignment of alphanumeric hull numbers; and commissioned on 10 April 1921, Lieutenant Louis R. The Tillman Story (DVD) $23.95 In 2002, as America was poised to go to war in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pat Tillman, a defensive back with the Arizona Cardinals, joined the United States Army, believing he had a duty to serve in a time of need even though he had signed a lucrative deal to play professional football. Tillman served a tour of duty in Iraq and was on patrol in Afghanistan when, on April 22, 2004, he was killed during a reconnaissance mission near the border of Pakistan. When word spread about Tillman`s death, the Army issued a press release declaring he`d been shot down while trying to heroically block the fire of a band of Taliban insurgents. While the Army`s story painted a glowing picture of the fallen soldier and athlete, some of the details sounded suspect to Tillman`s family, and in time they began asking questions. As it happens, Tillman`s parents were outspoken in their opposition to the war in Iraq, and after he had seen what was happening firsthand, so was Tillman, who had been a sharp student with an interest in politics during his college years.
