Why Using A Step Drill Bit Incorrectly Can Land You In A Whole Heap Of Trouble

There are a number of things that can go wrong when you attempt to drill a hole in metal. Allowing the drill to veer off could compromise the hole while using the wrong kind of drill bit could see it break during the drilling process. A step drill bit is among the best pieces of apparatus one can use when drilling metal but it should never be used to drill thick pieces. With a step drill, you can create a hole that gets larger the further the drill bit goes in. It is important to ensure that the drill bit is repeatedly sharpened before every use. Otherwise, the blunt version will do a poor job and may even get damaged if forced into the metal.

The best way to describe a step drill bit is to say that its tip is the smallest part of it. As you go further down the bit, it is noticeable that it gets thicker until it reaches the shaft. It has sharp edges and is the perfect tool to use when drilling through thin sheets of metal such as copper, aluminum and steel. They are also useful for wood and plastic but are primarily used for metal. These drill bits can be bought in a variety of different sizes. When you are planning to drill a hole, ensure that you have planned out the exact diameter you need before buying the requisite size drill bit. It is an astonishingly common mistake for a newcomer to the DIY game to choose the wrong sized drill bit.

If you create a hole smaller than you need then there is no real problem. In fact, it is common practice to bore a smaller hole with a hand held drill before using the step drill bit to finish the job. As long as the hole has been properly centered and is large enough to allow the narrowest part of a step drill to enter then the situation can be salvaged. However, if the hole that has been drilled is already too big, you have little choice but to try and cover it up and start in a different location. Incorrect use of drills account for the majority of extra holes you see in many homes!

It is dangerous to use any drilling equipment without safety goggles or alternative eyewear. Once the hole has been properly centered using a punch, it is best to use a small drill and create a hole approximately the size of the step drill bit tip. This will then allow you to place the step drill in the hole and start completing the job without worrying about the drill going off course. Always be patient when drilling and pull back whenever metal shavings become abundant. This action should shred these shavings which can clog a drill and make a mess of a hole if not removed.

Drilling a hole is neither as easy as it looks or sounds but using a step drill bit correctly will make it seem that simple. If you don't believe that it is possible to make mistakes when drilling holes, take a look around a friend's house next time you visit and look for evidence of poor drilling in the form of excess holes in the wall.
