When browsing a selection of crane trucks for sale or even when looking at your own inventory of crane trucks, it is vital for the owner or potential owner to understand the safety measures that must be taken during crane truck operation. As one would guess, operation of crane trucks, like most items in the "heavy machinery" category, can pose significant safety risks to those using them. Crane trucks can be an extremely useful tool, but if used incorrectly, can present very serious danger to the crane truck operator and those around him.

A crane truck consists of a heavy-duty truck that has been modified with a telescoping boom or crane with a hook on the end that can be moved horizontally or vertically.  Each truck has outriggers, which are leg-like looking attachments, and detachable counterweights to balance the crane during lifting operations. Crane trucks are primarily used to lift heavy materials or loads and to assist in the assembly of heavy equipment. There are a variety of mobile and fixed types of cranes available to accomplish the many different forms of lifting and moving work necessary for any project.

As previously stated, while a crane truck can save tremendous time and effort, it definitely needs to be respected for the powerful machine that it is. This is no ordinary car or truck with ordinary safety needs. These machines are highly complex, often requiring a team for successful operation. With advanced electronic controls, high-powered machine operation, and potentially dangerous power, Crane Trucks are a force to be reckoned with. For the business owner, the key to safety is training. A number of excellent tapes for drivers and crane truck operators to watch can be obtained through OSHA or directly from the truck manufacturer. Some key safety points for crane truck operation are as follows:

Many truck cranes have slow-travelling capability, usually just a few miles per hour, while suspending a load. Great care must be taken not to swing the load sideways from the direction of travel, as most anti-tipping stability then lies in the stiffness of the chassis suspension. Most crane trucks of this type also have moving counterweights for stabilization beyond that provided by the outriggers. Crane truck operators have to change the speed when they're about to swing a load or carry goods from one place to another. When performing this particular task, the crane truck operator must make sure that the change of speed is done gradually, the slower the better. If the goods carried are not considerably heavy, the crane should be lowered enough so that goods can be easily accessed and supported if it shows signs of falling off.

Loads suspended directly aft are the most stable, since most of the weight of the crane acts as a counterweight. Crane truck operators determining the maximum safe loads for stationary work, as well as for on-rubber loads and travelling speeds can use factory-calculated charts or electronic safeguards. To be 100% safe when loading and lifting goods, a mathematical equation can be used to determine the safe amount of goods that a crane truck can carry in specific conditions. However, since that would take too much time, the crane truck operator can always consult the manufacturer handbook when loading and lifting goods. Don't make any assumptions or estimates that are not properly supported and always use the advised size and number of straps and locks for the respective weight of load.

Moreover, each Crane Truck for sale has a lifting hook, which is operated by the crane operator using electric motors to manipulate wire rope cables through a system of sheaves. The hook is located on the long horizontal arm to lift the load, which also contains its motor. When hooking and unhooking the loads, the operator should always work in conjunction with a signaler (also known as a "dogger", "rigger" or "swamper"). Whether visible or, more often, in radio contact, hand signals should always be used. The signaler directs the schedule of lifts for the crane, and is responsible for the safety of the rigging and loads. It is important that the Crane truck operator never allows the hook to stay on the ground once loading goods is finished or operations have been temporarily ceased. Accidentally leaving the crane truck hook lying on the ground may cause an inadvertent hooking to something else entirely and in significant damage to the crane truck, the equipment, or even the load itself.

Any person operating the truck crane must always wear appropriate protective gear at all times to include safety goggles, safety boots, a hard hat, gloves, etc. to protect from falling objects. Crane truck operation requires the use of a control box. A safe operator must always remember to return the control box to its proper place once finished using it. If that's not possible, someone should be informed where the box is being kept for the time being or the box should be placed in a location where people would be easily able to find and access it. The crane truck operator must always remember to never make the mistake of leaving your control box in the vicinity of any radiation area as this may result in a very serious malfunction or accident.
