The animated cartoons in colors, that you see in the movies, were all colored with air brushes. That is how they get such beautiful shadings of color. Working with an air brush is not easy, but it is possible to study it and learn to do it very well, as thousands of people have done. Then it is possible to make very attractive pictures with the air brush. air compression Take a sponge in your hand and squeeze it as tightly as you can. It will become much smaller-as small as a marble if you squeeze it tightly enough. Now open your hand and release the pressure on the sponge. It will quickly spring out to the large size it was originally.
Although most people never stop to think of it this way, the air around you is a gas, a substance just like a piece of iron except that it is thinner. Air is so thin that you can press it into a smaller space, exactly as you can a sponge. You could easily press (or a better word is compress) all the air in the room you are sitting in so that it would occupy no more space than your fingernail. In fact, air can be compressed into such a small space that it becomes a liquid. But the minute you take away the pressure that has forced the air into such a small space, it wants to fly back to its original size, exactly as the sponge does. It puts forth so much force in trying to return to its original size that this force can be put to use to drive many machines and serve many useful purposes. You can measure this force for yourself, in a small way.
Blow up a rubber balloon. As you blow, the air has to fit itself into a smaller space and become compressed. The more you compress it, the more power it exerts in trying to get out of that rubber balloon. Blow long enough and this power will be so much that it will break the rubber balloon with a loud pop. Even if you have strong lungs and good wind, you probably have not succeeded in putting more than a few pounds of pressure into that rubber balloon. You can imagine how much force air can apply when so much air is forced into a tank or other space that it exerts hundreds of pounds of pressure in its effort to get out. It can drive many machines and do many jobs that a man is not strong enough to do. The compression of air is accomplished by quite a simple device. Any pump for a bicycle tire is an example of it. There is a "cylinder"-the round, hollow tube of the bicycle pump.
There is a piston, the wadding that moves up and down in the tube when it is worked by a rod and handle attached to it. There are two valves. One valve opens into the small tube that leads to the bicycle tire. The other valve opens on the outside air. When you press the piston down, it closes the valve that leads to the outside air and opens the valve that leads to the tire. The piston forces all the air that is in the cylinder into the bicycle tire. At this point, you pull the handle back and move the piston to the top of the cylinder again. This closes the valve that leads to the tire, and at the same time opens the tube that leads to the outside air. Air rushes in from the outside and fills the cylinder again. Now you press down again; you again close the valve to the outside and open the valve to the tire, and you press more air into the tire. As you pump away at the handle, it takes more and more of your strength to move that piston down. That is because the compressed air that is already in the tire is pressing back on the piston with almost as much strength as you have to press the handle down.
