EPA Rates 2011 Chevrolet Volt at 60 MPG

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the industry's first mainstream plug-in electric hybrid, has been issued a "combined composite" rating of 60mph for the volt. According to the General Motors that Chevrolet Volt will get the equivalent of 93 miles per gallon in electric-powered combined city and highway driving. And, the rechargeable electric car will get an estimated 37 mpg when running on its gasoline-powered generator. EPA said that the Volt has a range of 35 miles in electric-only mode, less than half the 73-mile range estimated for the Nissan Leaf battery-electric vehicle (which receives "miles per gallon equivalency" rating of 99MPGe). The volt's range is extended by another 344 miles when the gas engine kicks in. The EPA numbers are well short of General Motors' initial claim last summer that the Volt would achieve a mileage rating of 230 mpg. The Volt now has an official total range of 379 miles, with 344 miles of that being extended range (i.e., gas) driving. In calculating the MPGe rating, EPA estimation is the Volt can consume KW-hours of electricity per 100 miles in electric-only mode. Otherwise, Nissan Leaf's consumption is expected to be 34 kw-hour over the same distance. The Volt and Leaf will be on sale in December. The Volt is priced at $41,000, the Leaf at $33,600. Both prices include shipping, but do not include tax credits. Compared to the 2011 Toyota Prius hybrid which priced from $22,410, including shipping, and is rated by the EPA at 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway. This only means, Toyota Prius has been replaced as the most efficient car.
