Woods Addresses the News Media in Wet Wales

It was gray, cold and wet late on Tuesday afternoon when Tiger Woods's image popped up on the giant screen that towers above the 18th green at Celtic Manor like a jeans ad above Times Square. The panorama below was lighted by the picture on the screen and by a bright orange line in the sky that was flattened like a layer in a rain cloud cake.

The stands were empty. Some hard-core fans dressed in rain suits and clutching umbrellas passed the screen without looking as they strained against the steep blacktop incline that sweeps down from the old clubhouse.

"It's been, obviously, four years for me, so good to be back and looking forward to it," Woods was saying.

A bug in the left corner of the screen said Woods was speaking live from the interview room in the media center, not 25 yards from the gigantic image beaming an eight-foot Tiger face onto the deserted golf course.

Inside, the audience was rapt as Woods worked through the questions. His answers were at turns concise, terse and expansive, depending on the topic. He deflected efforts to elicit controversy. When asked, in effect, what it was like to be without a wife at the Ryder Cup, where wives tend to play a prominent role, Woods never varied his tone.

"I think it's a great week," he said. "We are all looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to it and it's just been a great week."

The fact is that Woods, who has been broadly characterized as a reluctant Ryder Cupper, is into the whole Ryder Cup deal this year with both feet, right up to the top of his head.

He has been baited and criticized, two things he will not really address, but which he will use this week to light the smoldering embers of his competitive fires – ready to blaze now that he is comfortable with the way he is striking and flighting his golf ball.

There was a time early in his career when, asked to characterized how he was hitting it, Woods responded, "I'm wide, tight and ripping it."
