It is one of the more boring topics, but it has to be discussed. The rail system of a CNC (computer numeric control) plasma cutter must be well constructed. The unit will most likely be kept in and asked to produce in harsh environment so all rail surfaces must be made of hardened materials. They must also be cleaned well and frequently so that the molten steel that will inevitably fall on them does not pit and gouge the rails. The precision and accuracy of a CNC plasma cutter depends on the smoothness of the rail system. You also have to make sure that the rails are large enough to prevent deflection as the bridge travels across them.

I would also recommend getting self-cleaning wheels which keep themselves clean between cycles of preventative maintenance (PM).

If you are a hobbyist or artisan then being this obsessed over rail cleanliness is not a must, but it is advisable. An amateur CNC plasma cutting machine is generally made from extruded aluminum which on its best day is not as sturdy as the fabricated steel that is used to make the industrial units. To keep the aluminum in working condition you should clean the rails after every day of use and also splurge for self-cleaning wheels.

The rails are just one component of CNC plasma cutting units, but they are just as important as every other piece. A complete CNC plasma cutting system is usually made up of:

1. A table for the cutting to take place on
2. The CNC system and cables
3. The rails
4. The bridge or gantry
5. The plasma cutting system
