All homeowners understand the importance of proper insulation. A well-insulated home is more comfortable to live in and costs far less to heat and cool than a home with sub-standard insulation. One of the most effective yet often overlooked forms of insulation is reflective foil insulation.

Reflective foil insulation is a thin layer of aluminum-based insulation that works to block radiant heat transfer. While traditional fiberglass insulation concentrates on blocking heat transferred by conduction or convection, it is an ineffective barrier against radiant heat transfer. Radiant heat transfer results when heat is transferred via air from one surface to another (an example being a very hot attic or scorching car seats in the summer) and it is the culprit of between 50% and 75% of the heat that is lost through a house's roof during the winter months. In terms of heat transferred into a house via the roof during the summer months, radiant heat transfer accounts for in excess of 90% of heat gain!

The best way to block radiant heat transfer is with reflective foil insulation. It is extremely effective and efficient as it reflects 97% of radiant heat. It can be used in conjunction with conventional fiberglass insulation and is extremely easy to install. In an attic, for example, installation is as simple as stapling the foil to the underside of the rafters. Alternatively it can be installed simply by rolling it out over the existing insulation in the attic floor. It also has the added benefit of being maintenance free.

The possible applications of reflective foil insulation are many. It can be used under concrete, in stud walls, basements, crawl spaces and wrapped around air ducts and water heaters. When used in interior walls, in the ceiling or roof or around the exterior of a house, reflective foil insulation creates an energy efficient, comfortable home with reduced heating and cooling costs.
